Mr. B,
Mike knew he had Hep C for a long time.
He had an unsuccessful treatment for that in 2003.
But he went back to his beer and wine.
He'd been to a Hepalologist at Mt. Saini in NY after a post treatment liver biopsy. She told him it would be 30 years before he had cirrhosis bad.
Oh, no. I wish I'd known what the down hill would look like. Maybe I could have been grumpier at him, made him pay attention. My words fell on deaf ears. (Private joke, poor Mike is profoundly hearing impaired, for real!)
In 2009, Mike had an enlarge prostate and they started him on meds and down the path to surgery. But his pre-op bloods were very odd. Low platelets, anemia, etc etc. This led him to the endscopy, colonoscopy and an enteroscopy (through the small bowel). They found Mike was bleeding internally and took care of that. But his blood didn't return to normal. No way were they going to do any prostate surgery...unless, of course, he had cancer, which he did not.
That started the quest for a "reason" for his abnormal readings, and finally to the diagnosis of cirrhosis and finally ESLD.
It was bunch of years from 2003 to 2009, but no 30 years!
From 2009 - September 2010 he was skating on thin ice every day! When he quit drinking it was barely in time.
Carol
