Monica,
We too have grade school grandchildren, 6 of them up north, as we live in Florida.
We told them the Pop might not get better. Sometimes the doctors can't fix you up, but they were going to try really really hard.
Each of the grandchildren came to see him that year, our thought that they might understand better if they saw him so sick. And it gave him great pleasure to have them here.
When he got his transplant, one of them was here, a 5 year old and we kept up a brave face for her. She came to the hospital every day. She even asked about
his incision and he showed it her...from breast bone to belly button and across to his side. It was clamped shut and he called it his zipper...they went in and fixed him up. she was satisfied with that!
And ours has had a happy ending, so far. Not everyone makes it. Our kiddies were prepared for it one way or the other.
Hugs, Carol
