My father received his transplant today

The surgeon said all went well and he is in recovery now. We should see him around 4pm.
Thank you for all the advice and positive thoughts. Now his recovery begins and I'm sure I'll have many questions going forward.

That's wonderful news! I wish your dad well in the post-op days to come. I keep an ongoing topic of My Post-Transplant Experience and will bring up the first of those. Bear in mind that patients are different and so are treatment centers and their care and planning. But it may answer some of your questions. Here's a link to my thread:

Congrats!! The relief you feel must be wonderful. Make sure to get as much rest as possible . . you are going to need it. The next 30 days especially, and the first few months at home . . so much to learn and keep track of . . all worth it!!

Congratulations!!! Hope all is going well!! The recovery is definitely an up hill battle but well worth the fight! I agree with everyone else, get your rest, you are going to need it. John got his new liver in July and is doing good! He was in the hospital for a month.

Please keep us updated, I would like to know how he is doing!!

We were discharged from the hospital this afternoon and are continuing the recovery period at an apartment near the hospital. So far so good.

Yes, 5 days. Now we stay near the hospital for 21 days before returning home. He is doing really well.

jck, that is really great news! Please continue to keep us updated on his progress.

David, I was only inpatient for 8 days. They wanted me out on the 5th or 6th day, but I didn't feel comfortable enough with the meds, so they let me stay a couple of extra days.

I think that you are close in an apartment, so if anything goes amiss,you can get help right away.  They always say that hospital are germ factories, all that MRSA and VRE stuff. 

Did they send him home with drains and a zillion pills and a chart for BP and temp, glucose monitor, etc.  We found the constant "schedule" of stuff to do and report was complex for me and impossible for HIM.  I think Connie did amazingly well for only 2 weeks of help and then on her own.

Are you comfortable enough to leave him and run out for groceries or Rx runs?

Hoping for the best.  Keep us posted when you can.  First we are interested, and second, those pre transplant are watching every step of the way to be prepared for their own time.

WOW!! FANTASTIC!! Being at the transplant facility for 3 months with my husband going in on deaths door, and many, many bumps in the road, I saw no one out of the hospital in 5 days!! I saw a man go to the hotel after 9 days and home @ 21 . . it is wonderful that he is doing that well, and has you there for the aftercare!!

I also want to say "Connie, I also have great admiration for you handling things yourself so quickly". It has been 7 months & I still set up my husbands meds for him!! he could do it himself if he had to, I just feel more comfortable doing it.

Great news again for another successful transplant and the gift of life!!

Debbie, thanks, but I just did what I had to do as there was no other choice. It didn't take me long to catch onto the meds. My medical transcriptionist training was a big help through the whole thing, from evaluation through post-transplant.

Carol, it wasn't even 2 weeks...it was 10 days.

Wow, that is really great news. I also have.a dad who is sick. Was just added to the transplant list. Can only hope and pray he does as well as yours.

My dad has been released by the Mayo Clinic and is home.
He continues to do great.

Jck, that's terrific! How long did he stay in the hospital? Was this Mayo FL? So glad to hear he is doing well. May it continue to be so. It does take time to regain strength, get accustomed to the meds routine, etc.

I just wanted to reach out and give hope and encouragement to anyone awaiting a transplant. Two months ago, my father was diagnosed with primary liver cancer. He received his transplant on 9/4 and now,a month later, he is walking his dog a mile a day and feeling good.

It is a scary road, but so worth it.

Jck, thanks for the update! Your dad is doing great! I can't walk that far at nearly a year post TP, but I have artificial hips and had a multitude of problems after transplant, including having to be opened up again in March and developing leg ulcers at the rt. shin, which are only now clearing up.

I hope your dad continues to do well!

My husband is 8 months post transplant today, and he can't walk a mile either!! On a brighter note, he continues to improve daily and his bloodwork, still done every other week, continues to look good!!

Every situation is soo different . . my husband was so close to death, and had been mostly bedridden for 4 months prior to TP, due to HE, he lost over 100lbs, 240 to 126, and the Dr's and surgeons call him their Miracle Man. When we went to have the "T" tube removed, his TP Coordinator got tears in her eyes as she was telling him how wonderful he looked!!

God is Great!!
