Liver disease and alcohol do not mix . I honestly can't say what the effect of a one light mixed drink , Beer or wine in a social setting would have on a person with a damaged liver . The general consensus is that's it's not gonna help and typically nobody has just one in a social environment , Be they a alcoholic or not . I see drinking as not being a option , I'm not afforded the choice of one drink at all . My liver is too far gone and I worked too hard to get to a point where I no longer live in constant pain to go back .
My brother about 4 years ago turned forty . His wife called and asked if I was well enough to travel and come to his party to surprise him , I hadn't been around alcohol in a year and he and his friends are heavy drinkers . I was hesitant to immerse myself in that environment again even though I knew I had no desire to drink , In fact I was still going through my pretransplant evaluation and one slip would forfeit my ability to receive a transplant .
I went anyhow despite my reservations and my wife lectured me continuously for the 5 hour drive there . I looked and felt like warmed over death but we made it . My brother was indeed surprised , and the party started that evening with everyone getting drunk most of the night and began again at breakfast the next morning until early A.M that night when they all passed out . I was miserable the whole time feeling like I was babysitting a bunch of children and not to mention still firmly in the grips of the sickness this lovely disease brings , I put a smile on and made it through the party .
My wife and I sat amongst 30 people swilling down alcohol for 2 days while we drank ginger ale's and iced tea's . Oddly enough beyond the first hour or so after watching the shenanigans my desire to participate diminished to nothing and a real distain for alcoholic stupidity overwhelmed me . I love my brother but I was ready to get the hell outta there when we left . As we drove home I looked at my wife and said " Tell me I didn't act like that ". She smirked and said " Now you know how I felt for the last few years ".
I don't condemn folks who choose to drink socially or alcoholically , Brother , friend or foe . I will however tell any of them it's a very risky behavior and if someone has liver disease of any form , well ........ I feel it's my obligation to tell them it's suicidal . Nobody knows better than the individual who puts the bottle their lips if the are a alcoholic , Getting them to admit they have the problem is the real challenge .
