Just out of interest is there any truth in this statement?

I found the following statement on a web page and I wondered if this is just some made up fact or if there is evidence of a study to support this claim? I thought its a bit misleading really as they don't say how or where they get their info.

Do all alcoholics get alcoholic hepatitis and eventually cirrhosis?
No. Some alcoholics may suffer seriously from the many physical and psychological symptoms of alcoholism but escape serious liver damage. Alcoholic cirrhosis is found among alcoholics about 10-25 % of the time.

This is what I have read also. But I am not doctor.

Mike was one of the unlucky ones, I guess...also with Hep C and some environmental risks for liver disease (worked in a factory with degreasing chemicals)....he totaled his liver at age 61.

Even those with cirrhosis, who quit drinking in time, can have a long pretty healthy life.

 I don't know that the statistics are correct but the statement is correct , I know a lot of people and a few in my family that drank more heavily than I did and some still do without liver issues . My Grandfather drank vast amounts of alcohol daily and lived to be 87 years old before dying of a heart related illness . A uncle of mine died at 48 with Cirrhosis . I can't explain the why's of the selective numbers who get it , but the statement does seem correct .

I agree that the statement is correct. I drank alcoholically for many years, but when I was biopsied in '93, there was no cirrhosis. By then, I was 7 years sober. In '07, there was cirrhosis, but not from drinking--from hep C.

My daughter's friend died at the age of 26, he was in hospital waiting for transplant the day b4 the op he got an infection he coughed a little blood next thing all internal organs bled he died, and as I told u my 63 year alcoholic friend has abused herself for many+ years, she had a blood transfusion on Monday which has caused some people concerned, as doctors say they won't revive next time she needs resus,our blood banks are so low, unfortunately not enough people donate, so I can see their argument, that if there was a major collision on one of motorways (highways) & a healthy adult/child needs blood that this has been wated on her, as she has been in rehab so many times, my other point is would people think twice if they had to pay if they were unsuccessful costing our tax payers out of their hard earned wages, I have to say even though she is my close friend I have no faith in her, how very sad

 I seriously doubt it would make a difference to a alcoholic or drug addict if they new they had to pay through the nose to recover from self inflicted damaged . I never thought this would happen to me and I'm sure that's what a lot of us think . It's always those losers who sleep in the streets and people who are of poorer , You know the stereotypical bum .

 I find that a lot of addicts are totally the opposite of that stereotype , We function , Contribute to society via taxes and generally care about our health to some extent . I did , I have paid taxes since I was old enough to crop tobacco in the summer as a young teen . I have always been physically fit ( Never overweight ) and appeared externally healthy for the majority of my life , Never took off work for a hangover and often went in when I had a cold or felt miserable . I never saw my life turning out this way .

 Yes , We as a society have become takers . Give me what I am due no matter the cost to our neighbor or our children . Let me slip my tin foil hat on and propose something for you to consider . We are trapped , The world monetary system is going to tank . Health care even here in the U.S is becoming a reflection of the European model ( Crap ) and there is no logical way of avoiding a the cost of Social security , Unemployment , Welfare and every other " Entitlement " programs we have in place today . Millions are abusing the system but the cats outta the bag and you cant put him back in , Generations of people have grown accustomed to not working or contributing to society and they will not take the loss of one dollar of benefits lightly . My guess is it will happen and Greece will be a picnic in comparison .

Now factor in how health care has been going . In lieu of proper surgical procedures ( Too costly and surgeons are terrified of malpractice ) the medical community resorts to pharmaceuticals to mask the underlying issue . Now we have a entire world of drug addicted zombies from cradle to grave , Mindless drug addicts don't tend to put up much of a fight as long as you keep the drugs coming . In short the only way to resolve the current situation our world is in today is a thinning of the herd and that is what I believe is happening . Survival of the fittest and our names aren't on the keeper list .

EHHH what do I know ?  Heck , I'm just a humble barn yard animal with a slightly overactive imagination but it sure sounds feasible . Now off to take my Lactulose  smilewinkgrin  .

 Honestly I don't have the money to build something like that and if I did I wouldn't waste my time with such . Just never could figure out what you'd do once you popped up outta that hole and everything was gone . Ya know , What's the point if the only thing that's gonna greet you is some guy who was the reason I got in the hole to start with . Nope I'm heading to Nantucket should all hell break loose , I figure should I go before you that you would at least get to enjoy some pulled pork or ribs off me . Anything for a friend you know smhair . Oh yeah , Stopped taking my Lexapro about a week ago . Maybe I should just go get it filled again , Ya think ?

Well I'm being tested for liver function today, I've been out of work for around a year now but I've only claimed benefit for 26 weeks as that was all they would allow me. I have worked full time since I was 17 right up until I was 34 so that's about 17 years. Of course the benefit system here is designed to keep giving money to the non contributors.
I get free health care but so do the folks who have never worked a day in their lives. My child will get free schooling which I believe myself and my fiancé have helped contribute towards over the years but so do the non contributors. They get free housing, certain bills paid for them heck they can even afford to put the heat on in winter, we can't yet my fiancé works and has a good job.

They have another child they can then move to a bigger house (paid for by the tax payer of course) and a lot of them are offered brand new houses too, so their living standards are pretty good.

I worked all week, paid my taxes and had a few drinks at the weekends and now I'm about to go for an lft this morning. Gotta cycle the 5 miles to the doctors at 7 months pregnant because we can't afford a bus ticket yet the people a few doors away living in council accommodation have more money than myself and my fiancé and have a nice little car parked outside.

Anyhow..... That's life, it isn't fair. But I must admit I agree with the rhesus statement. Rhesus is low therefore it should be given on a priority basis and not wasted on someone who won't give up drinking. I will never drink again no matter what this mornings test reveals. When we drink we think ah sure what harm can it do? We are not really given the full facts. I think alcohol companies should be made to put a picture of a alcoholic's diseased liver and a clean liver on their bottles as I don't think a drinkaware logo web address is enough.

 WNH , You have every right to feel the way you do . I personally had to fight tooth and nail to get health care , I believe I would have surely died had it not been for my old job took it upon themselves to cover me for the one year waiting period for approval into social security . Even with my ex job covering me I still had to pay for the group plan monthly and what ever deductibles I incurred , I have never had to beg in my life for anything and found myself begging for everything .

 As I sat in waiting rooms while diagnosed with chronic liver disease and dying I saw folks time and again who couldn't speak a word of English , Folks laughing amongst each other about their " Baby's Daddy's  " and the ever popular , " Girl , When I get my check this month we going to da club " . Oh what a mess we have gotten ourselves into . You knew about this problem before just as I did , We all are guilty of not saying a word about it because of a fear of being labeled as unsympathetic , racist and just plain un civil . Sorry , The lazy and Immoral are running our world amuck and that's just the facts as I have witnessed .

Oddly enough this problem has turned decent people against each other . Two men sitting in a room , One proclaims " I served in the military 30 years ago and I deserve the right to be treated ahead of you " . The other man turns in horror and says " I slaved for this country for 50 years and paid my taxes , You deserve no better treatment than me ". All the while 20 people sitting watching this debate has never had a job nor Will or do they intend to fight for this country . What a backassward society we live in today .

Before you set out today for your office visit don't forget to put air in your bike tires . So , so , sad !!!

Lol thanks for the advice but sadly I don't even have a tyre pump so if I get a flat tyre I am soooo screwed!

So I did the ten mile round trip to the docs and back and have been feeling so tired ever since (its now 8pm here). I can't sleep however much I want to because I keep getting woken up by people everytime I start to drift off.

Ziffle you are right but here the problem isn't the ex army folk, no over here we have two problems, we have no border control and not only that but we now have a situation where people are second and even third generation dole benefiters. Now this second mentioned problem for me is the real issue because if we didnt have that problem we wouldn't have the first problem. People from other parts of Europe are attracted to this country because of the freebies the government happily dish out to non working families.

Whilst at the doctor's today I was standing in the queue to see the receptionist and this polish guy was at the desk complaining that he can't get his child into a certain school (which I hear happens to be the best school in the city). The receptionist tells him to move house as the children's parents are eligible to apply for a place if they live in the correct area. So this is classic he says "Ok I will telephone the council and tell them to give me a house in this area, thanks". And then he walks away. So this guy who has obviously only been in the country a few months can simply move house for nothing and his son will likely get priority when he applies for a place in this school.

We can't move house because we can't afford to so our child will likely have to go to a lesser recommended school even though the childs dad ( my fiancé) works extremely hard and always has done. a few weeks after the baby is born I'm going back to job hunting, yet at the doctors today both of the parents of the little boy were present so my guess is that its likely that neither of them work after all they lived in free council accomodation.

Yeah Ziffle the ones that have baby daddies and baby mommas bug the life out of me too. Here to get a house you can simply put father unknown on the kids birth cert and apply for free housing and its been going on for years, though I hear they are clamping down on this but I hear people all the time while I'm at the supermarket talking about how to "get around the loopholes". Teenagers aren't discouraged from having babies here in fact if anything they are encouraged because they can claim quite a lot. It sucks!

It's about the same over here, Worried. However, there are some who genuinely need help, and I'm one of them. My Part B Medicare premium is paid...and thank goodness, as it's now over $100/mo. I live in a Senior apt. complex in a nice area, that is subsidized by the government. Some here pay full rent (very high out here at the beach.) Most, though, are lower income and pay a percentage of the rent, though it's far from free. I (and all my neighbors) worked hard all my life and had SS taxes taken out. But what I receive, in this economy (cost of living is increasing by leaps and bounds) I could never afford full rent anywhere.

However, I feel that I've earned this bit of help and am very grateful for it.

Connie I think that's different entirely, I think if you have worked hard and paid into society over the years then of course you should be looked after by the government should you need it.

The people I was ranting about is the people who don't lift a finger yet they expect everything to be handed to them. One day I was on a bus (which is a luxury for me these days) and this girl I would say was about 20 years old was talking to some old man. She was banging on about how she was being forced out of her free housing by the council and how the council told her to go and live with family. She simply told the council that she can't stand her mother and therefore she can't live with her so the council agreed to let her stay in the house. She said to the old gentleman she made it up and that she goes to see her mum every couple of weeks (who is according to the girl also living in free accommodation). During the conversation the girl told the old guy that she was on her way to sign for her £130 a fortnight benefit which according to her was a disgrace and that she should be entitled to more.
I was that close to turning around and saying "Sure work all your adult life then see how hard they treat you when you fall on hard times". But I stopped myself as I thought nah it would go in one ear and come out the other and there's millions of people like her so what is having a go at her going to achieve. In the conversation she revealed she worked once for a week or two and didnt like it because the boss was "an a*****e" so she had been claiming money off the taxpayer for four years and had a whole apartment paid for by the taxpayer for the same length of time.

Its people like her that I cannot abide, but as her mother and father never worked either I can't really blame her completely for her lack of work ethic and lack of gratitude. Governments come down hard on the workforce yet these people get it easy. Yes there genuine people who really do need the money and the free housing, but the system needs a good shake up to separate the people who don't need it from the people who do.
We are finding it tough at the moment. A lot of people might say then why have a baby? The truth is I did get pregnant by accident I know its hard to believe lol but its true and though abortion was mentioned we couldn't find it in our hearts to deny this little one a chance in life so here we are and yeah we have our ups and downs but because we have had 7 months to get used to the idea of becoming parents we now couldn't imagine it any other way :-)

I just hope I can get employment after this so out child grows up knowing that you go to work to pay your way in life. Anyway that's just me.

Unfortunately, I have a middle-aged daughter just like that. She has only worked a total of 5 yrs. and that was in increments of a few days here and a month there, all for different companies.

She wasn't with me after age 6 and eloped at age 16. Divorced 9 yrs. later.

No matter who we elect over here in the UK they still love to give easy money and expensive housing to the lazy folk.

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter for whatever reason had not lived with you after 6 years old.

There is a craze over here where these people nip to the local supermarket or pub or betting shop or wherever and they don't even bother getting dressed, they just go in their pyjamas. I've seen it countless times over the last 2-3 years. Seriously people here really are that lazy.

There's a fad over here of men wearing pajama pants out in public. The pants are manufactured and sold individually...no top. But yes, that really is lazy.

At least they are just wearing pyjama bottoms, here they come out with their slippers and dressing gowns on, the lot! If I had a £1 for every one that I have seen walk up the street with their pyjamas on I would be very rich right now lol. I even walked past a Chinese takeaway one evening and there were two of them standing in it wearing their pyjamas! My mum's local supermarket banned people from coming in with their pyjamas on there were signs up all around the shop it was crazy.

Rememer the olden days (when I was a kid at least)...you wore a HAT to church, and gloves.  And never wore sneakers to school.  Except for gym. And you had to change before gym, not just wear sneakers all day.  Even in college (I want to a Baptist grad school in FL) they didn't allow smoking on campus.  Period.  PJs.  NEVER outside..and with a nice bathrobe inside!  Boy it was boring in the olden days. I remember in High School it was sooo cold in the NY winter we wore snow pants under our SKIRTS  and took them off when we got to school.  My first years teaching it was the same...we put on snow pants to do recess duty...no pants for teachers into the 1970s in my town!  (The skirts, however, got pretty short as I recall...like barely covered your panties before MIDIs came in style.

ML, I used to do that, too...wear pants under my skirts until I got to school. Pants and shorts were NOT allowed in school, and it wasn't a religious one...public schools.

Carol/Connie - you did bring back memories with your posts! Here in UK, school uniform is the norm in most schools (fee paying and non fee paying - I won't use the word 'public' because for some reason here public schools refer to fee paying ones!)) and I remember mine for school in the late 1960s included some very fetching hats - blue felt in the winter and - wait for it - a straw boater in the summer! But there were certainly no trousers (pants) allowed and skirts could be no more than 2 inches above the knee. Like Connie I used to wear trousers underneath for the journey to school in winter.

By the time I went to university in the mid 1970s it was totally relaxed I'm pleased to say and I wore anything I like (and given the 1970s fashions I'm not proud of some of the things I wore). Mind you when I graduated I then joined the Army so went back to a uniform. Perhaps I just didn't like deciding what to wear in the mornings!

Back when I was a kid, we had to walk 3 miles uphill (both ways), through 3 feet of snow to get to school.
