Thanks Connie. I do not know what I am doing sometimes. I just could not resist giving out the information since I was led to that site by another forum.

The last time I posted it was about my daughter's mother-in-law who had hep c and cirrhosis and liver cancer. She had surgery for the liver tumor (12 cm). She had an extended recovery from that but eventually they could do no more and she passed away this February.

Then, sadly, my brother-in-law passed away last week. I always suspected liver damage from heavy drinking but things became disastrous about five weeks ago. He had swelling in his legs and a doctor prescribed Coumadin. Even though he was taking a low dose, it quickly became too much and his INR was over 20. He was having black stool and the day before going to the hospital one side of his body was purplish-red. He was also weak. He had not really eaten in two weeks. In the ER he was given fresh frozen plasma and vitamin K. From there it went downhill. He ended up with: After getting a feeding tube (PEG) in the hosptal, aspiration pneumonia. He also suffered from severe peripheral neuropathy from alcohol and had not walked in over a year. He had severe bed sores from this. He had pseudomonas present in his urine. He had atrial fibrillation. His blood pressure was kept up with medication. His heart rate would get up to 170-180. He was on oxygen.

Ultimately the doctors practically begged my sister to place him on DNR and finally a team talked to the family about removing everything and letting him go. They said rescusitation in the event he stopped breathing and his heart stopped would be violent (break ribs) and would not "make a hill of beans difference." She finally acquiesed, though she was broken. It was very hard to watch. He was suffering by this point.

My sister says that no one ever said anything about "liver disease," although the death certificate says end-stage liver disease as one of the causes of death. Although he was obviously a heavy drinker, is it possible that no doctor saw this?
