Hello everyone,
I am leaving in the morning cross country to visit my 95 yr old mother. I intend to tell her my hcc dx. I still may 'bend' the truth a bit, depending on her receptivity. I am afraid. Afraid of her reaction, worst being her believing I just ruined any amt of time she may have left. (She is healthy). Shocking, to me at this age, 67, I am afraid of her reaction.
Been feeling a bit lost lately and very bothered by not being able to make decisions.
Connie I've never thought much of derms. The ones that I Saw at the Seattle cancer hospital were fabulous. The one I c here is the one that said I had pn. When I told Seattle that, they ALL said u do not have pn. I have bigger fish to fry now and have let the derm go. Itched whether I saw him or not. He was shooting prednisone and kenalog under each lesion. Some it helped others not.
Anyway guys, hold me close and say some prayers that I do the right thing with my mother. This is freaking me out.

Zoari, I can guarantee you I will not let them inject me with Prednisone...or give it to me orally. Just no.

As for your mom, if you do tell her, make sure she knows that it is treatable, and if successful you can live a normal life with some restrictions--like no alcohol. Do not come across as all serious, as though your diagnosis is the end of the world--because it isn't. She likely knows nothing about hep C, so keep it brief. If she asks questions, answer briefly and always keep it positive. Her first question will be, "What is that?" and/or "How did you get it?" This latter question is what prevents me from telling all but family and close friends...and, of course, the forum members. I really don't want to get into my drug history with neighbors and casual friends.

I would mention that you need extra sleep and rest right now, so she won't be concerned if you have to get extra sleep at night or take a nap during the day.

How fortunate your mom is to be healthy at 95!

Very good advice from Connie. You may want to keep it within the family because the general public attaches a stigma to it sometimes. They think they can catch it by working alongside you.

Go enjoy your visit and get some rest. Don't agonize over mom. She didn't get to be 95 by flipping out over things ;)

Zoarie, have a safe trip! And even though you have so much going on do try to enjoy some of the time just visiting with your mom. You are blessed to have her still.

Mae, I love your comment about someone not getting to be 95 by flipping out over stuff. It is so true. Worry and stress over things we can't control is so pointless and unhealthy, and one of the hardest things to stop yourself from doing.

So true Doni,

My very dear aunt from NY passed away yesterday at the age of 95!
She never let anything bother her, a very sensible and loving woman.

I never heard her raise her voice EVER, nor did I ever see her get rattled so I guess there is something to that :)

Mae, my condolences. I lost my favorite aunt about 3 1/2 years ago and still miss her a lot. She was a young thing at 81.

Yes David and thank you. She and my uncle were a poster couple for the institution of marriage. :). It's so nice to have favorite aunts/uncles. For me they took the place of the grandparents I never really got to enjoy.

I'm going to NY for the services Saturday.
