Syxx,
Mike had his first rotator cuff tears repaired before transplant, during that period of ESLD where his portal hypertension was bad and his platelets were very low.
The hematologist we consulted (as the ortho guy wouldn't operate given his horrible labs without the consult), didn't allow him to have the surgery in a surgi center (usual); rather wanted it IN a hospital where help could be on hand quickly if there was a bleed, etc. And he had to have a platelet transfusion 30 minutes before the surgery.
All this was done, and he did fine.
Please know that he had a second surgery on that same shoulder after transplant, at about
a year, but this time they did it at his transplant hospital and refixed the tears, and reattached two tendons (biceps and supraspinatus).
In both cases, transplant had no problem with him having anesthesia or the surgery itself. They said it was silly to have a fixed liver if you couldn't play golf!
Well, he hasn't been up to golf, of course, because the other side needs a fix-up too!!!
Mike can't catch a break sometimes.
