This sure doesn't sound right to me, RP.

If it were me, I would get in my car and go in the opposite direction, to the nearest teaching hospital's ER and get some help. No one should be sent home leaking the way you are. It opens up all kinds of opportunities for nasty infections. You have to be your own advocate, the squeaky wheel, yada yada.

If you find a good hospital, with a doc you like, have all your records sent. Seems like you have gone through all the doctors in your current facility and not one of them is worth their salt....letting you suffer so.

I think you better talk to your NP about stopping anything like lasix, it's a very useful drug in some situations, so be careful about stopping.

How did you make out today? Please post when you can, I am a bit concerned about all that leakage.

Well I just got out of the hospital. Horrible week! I had that second abscess & it needed to be drained again, so I went to a different hospital & I again told the surgeon I should have a drain placed since I keep getting abscesses & they didnt. So 2 days later I got my third one so this time they placed a pen tube drain in but I was expected to walk to bathroom on my own & had to point out that I was getting my urine in the incision site so they put a catheter in (Duh!) I now am on a 14 day course of i.v antibiotics for an infection in my wound that I have to get rides to an infusion clinic for & no one will tell me what kind of infection it is or what antibiotic Im on. They keep saying thats the surgeons job. Im at home now with the catheter & iv & the two surgical sites look yet again red swollen & abnormal. Im not running any fevers so am not too concerned but am in a ton of pain. My pain meds dont seem to be working & it sucks. I am bruised all over both arms due to them not finding any good veins for blood draws & ivs. The er doc herself had to draw from an artery in the fold of my arm & it was & still is very painful. Its hard & purple where she drew it. Im down, i cant stop crying & all this - 3 extra surgeries from a simple groin lymph node biopsy. My surgeon was rude & anesthesiologist made a weight comment right before my last surgery that almost made me cry. When I came to after saturdays surgery, one of my nurses spilled my pop all over my brand new $75 purse & ruined it. My ipad was next to it but thankfully didnt get wet. I had my pop in a disney cup my daughter gave me & I just didnt get a chance to pour it out before surgery. I stopped drinking it when they told me I was to have emergency surgery but didnt think they would spill it. Im home & Im glad I am, but appalled at my lack of care again. What could this infection be in my wound culture ? Anyways, theres my latest update. My surgical sites look pretty bad & I have no idea what to do if they get any more swollen. The abscess site is as big as before. Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated!

I am soooo sorry this is happening to you. The best part of this story is that you are on IV meds They deliver the strongest best meds this way... Such as vancomycin and flagyl. It must be a pain to go to the infusion center but they must know what you need at this time. No fever is a good thing. Could you get them to send a visiting nurse for wound care? Most Of the insurances cover it when you have just been released.

If you are truly not well. I agree with David. Go to ER.

You've been through hell and back, bless your little heart ;( Don't let any folks in the medical field tell you that you cannot know what type of antibiotic you are getting, or what type of infection it is (if known).

Normally I would have had a retort for that anesthesiologist jerk, but the trouble is, you have to let him hold your life in his hands, the bast***d.

I'm getting my bp up just reading your posts, so sorry for all your trouble. I would go to the ER but at a hospital that is top notch, or the best one around at least. Maybe you will get some compassionate care this time, don't take a chance on your health, just go.

My surgeon wont help this pain. Its pretty severe but the combination they have me on isnt working. Im still hurting badly! They cut deeper & inserted a bigger drain yet expect my pain not to be worse. Just now the surgeon gave me an order of ultrams. I just looked it up & it has aceteminiphine in it which im not supposed to take due to my liver & it also does not interact safely with warfarin. If i dont stay on top of these people they may hurt me worse. Any thoughts or suggestions greatly grealy appreciated!

I am in the hospital David. I had a 4th surgery last night around 11:45 pm to drain a 4th huge abscess with Cellulitis all from a groin lymph node biopsy a month ago. They want me to just deal with the pain I guess. Im on what I usually take at home for my daily pain, which is 4mg Dilaudids 3 times a day, but I just had surgery last night & it hurts a lot. Theyre giving me 1 mg iv dilaudid every 4 hours in top of what I normally take. They act like Im seeking drugs when I am just seeking relief from this pain. I noticed in my online chart someone ordered a complete drug test that covered everything from cocaine to meth & I have only the Dilaudid in my system. They make me feel bad by treating me this way. I dont smoke or drink or do any drugs. They didnt put a drain in at my first abscess surgery & due to that Ive had 3 extra surgeries which couldve been avoided. Im not happy! I had my ex bring my pain meds from home & have been taking them to control my own pain since the hospital that operated on me wont. Oregon sucks if youre sick, need surgery or are in pain. Im moving back to New Mexico due to the better specialists & more caring medical people there as soon as I can. The nurse came in & said this Ultram doesnt have any aceteminophine in it & its safe to take with warfarin. Its on my lists of meds that dont interact with my coumadin, so I am refusing them. Theyre not giving me anything else for the pain she said. Its a good thing I had mine brought from home. The surgical site has 2 holes & is huge & red & swollen. It looks as painful as it feels & its in the middle thigh are right where I sit!

Seems like you have your share of quack or incompetent doctors! I was so sure you would go to a better hospital by now, so YES, as long as you're stable, get to the U of P, ASAP. If you're still in hospital, maybe your insurance will pay for transport to Portland....I know my insurance would.

When will you realize that you are playing around with your life by sticking with these proven incompetents?

Thank you both so so much!!! I wished I'd seen your post earlier Mae, i left & came home. I did not know i couldve transported to OHSU from there or i wouldve. Im going to go thru the proper steps now & go back thru dallas ER & have them transport me to OHSU in Portland. I had no idea u can do that. No one told me they said going back to salem was my only option. Since i left ama, if im seen in 1 of their er's within 30 days- after my ama, im ok insurance & liability wise. So ill do that this afternoon. This abscess is not draining much fluid again & is bulging out bigger instead just like all the last ones did. Im scared but staying strong! Stupid me thinking one of their surgical "team" would help. Ill post again in a few days.

If this continues, let me suggest you do a temp relocate to Seattle? We have Harborview who has kept my wife alive with hepatic renal syndrome for almost 5 months and with good insurance, Swedish, who she is just waiting for that perfect liver for transplant RIGHT NOW. She will not be leaving, even Harborview would not release her until time for transplant. They are SERIOUS here about care and only the best of care. Being home is great, but sometime the best care is 24 hr. In this situation, if you need a temp place while being seen up here, if you need, we have sleep space being added to or VERY inner city space (9 blocks from Harborview, 11 from Swedish's transplant center) that should arrive on 4/8. I would be happy to help, if I can. We have two cats and a bird...just warning ;)

This applies to you but I post here to let RP know too. This is from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh but it is the same that we were told at Mayo Clinic:

Pets
Transplant recipients should not come in contact with animal urine, feces, or vomit (emesis). Bird droppings, especially from pigeons, often carry a fungus that is dangerous to immunosuppressed patients. However, the Hillman Center for Pediatric Transplantation staff does not ask transplant recipients to give away their house pets. If your child is a transplant recipient, institute staff recommend that he or she:

Wash hands well after touching pets.
Have someone else care for sick pets.
Have someone else clean up after pets, including cleaning the bottom of birdcages or changing cat litter.
Not allow pets to roam freely outside (Cats in particular may pick up infectious agents while hunting rodents.)
