Hey KIF,
MamaLama emailed me to talk to you. Do you have a place to stay down there? If not have you tried the Gabriel House there on campus?
Actually it would be so much easier and faster for you to call me but I need your email address, yours says "unavailable".
My brother and I went down in November, while we waited for the insurance approval and that took awhile..turns out they had the info they needed long before they realized it, some snafu.
The evaluation is normally 3 weeks or so, they give you a schedule of like 30 appointments. Each day you should check in at the desk in case they have changed something. Often, when there were gaps in his schedule, we would squeeze in other appointments to expedite things. Anytime you have a gap, you call this number that they will give you, and they will help fill the gaps for you.
After his evaluation, now into December, they found that he needed a zoster vaccine for which you cannot transplant until 30 days have passed, grrrr. But it turned out that the head Doc said that 2 weeks would be okay. So it wasn't long after the two weeks that he was transplanted (Jan 13).
I highly recommend filling those appt gaps whenever possible, you just never know. Bring ALL medical records that you can get your hands on before you leave. Keep them organized chronologically and by type (labs, imagery, etc).
My brother was transplanted 11 days after he was listed, by then his MELD was around 26 or 28. The thing was, while he was in the hospital to get a tune-up, his MELD would always improve. Anticipating this, I asked the doc on a Sunday if my brother's MELD could be re-calculated mid-week (they meet on Wednesdays). She said "sure, I'll do it today". She left, and within 2-3 hours, they were back at his bedside with an offer of a liver from a 50 something woman.
Email me with your phone number.
My email is in my profile, click on my name to the left of this post to save time with all the questions I imagine you have. **David** did this for me and he spent an hour or more on the phone with me answering my ton of questions when my brother was in Mayo. It's so helpful to talk with someone who has "been there"
Best of luck!
