I am sorry to hear Mike lost his battle with ESLD.

My husband, themister, has suffered with HE since TIPS was performed in Jan. 2013. I found Cynthia Wade's documentary online in December 2012. When themister was informed he needed TIPS and a transplant, I started seeking something on the procedure. Knowing he had to go forward, he was horrified as he watched the behaviors of those impacted, including your Mike.

Thank goodness I found the documentary and had some clue what was happening to my husband. I am amazed so little information is given by the medical community to those with liver disease. In my guy's case, he had sudden onset HE in ICU, immediately following TIPS. He was unable to care for himself, on any level, for one year. Things are more stable most days now, but it is up and down with 24/7 care.

HE is the most difficult part of ESLD for many sufferer's and carer's. I saw the impact on your lovely son. I do hope he is healing from the toll of the disease, as well as the great loss of a parent. I send you both Big Hugs

I'm so glad to hear the documentary is on here. Thank you themiz, for sharing that with me. We noticed Mike had the most unusual behavior, for years, before we woke up to find him laying on the living room floor, non responsive, in a hepatic coma. I thought it was a diabetic coma, because we didn't know his liver was sick. I almost couldn't believe the doctor when he said let me check his ammonia, and came back and said, he's in complete liver failure. His ammonia is 120. So I got on google and looked up high ammonia and liver failure, and Wikipedia described Mike to the T. After years of confusion about his behavior, I finally got my answers.
My son is doing a lot better now. We moved back home to California, to be with family, and he really likes it here. Doing the documentary, really helped him be more understanding of his dad's mean moods. He became more caring and less resentful. God is what got us through the worst of times. Lavender, I'm so sorry your going through all of this pain and heartache. My heart hurts for you right now.
I know that I used to gt so exhausted and mentally drained, from caring for my husband, that I would cry, or yell at him. He would get all sad, and say I'm sorry. But I told him, I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the disease. I hate the disease and what it did to you.
So maybe if you remind your husband that it's the disease controlling your body, and not you, he might be more understanding. I'll pray that he can accept that. And maybe help you out, a little bit more. You poor thing.

HE GOES TO MY APPOINTMENTS WITH ME. LAST TIME WAS about MY FALLING BCKWORD AND MESSING UP YET ANOTHER THINGS TO MYSELF, AND YET HE IS Rr IGHT THERE HE .NEVER SAW A THING.THREE DAYS LATER HE TOOK ME TO DR. TWO DAYS I WAS TRYING TO UPGRADE MY PIGGISH STILE, AND FORGOT TO TURN THE WATER OFF ON THE BATHROOM SINK . I HAD NEVER SEEN THE DEVIL BEFORE BUT THERE HE WAS. I HAD JUST RECEIVED A CALL FROM DR. I BELIEVE TO SK IF I WOULD PAIN MED FOR MY BACK. HE STARED YELLING AT ME SAID HE DID'NT CARE WHO I Was ON THE PHONE AND THREW IT ACROSS THE ROOM,THEN CONTINUIED TO GRAB MY HAIR AND POUND MY HEAD INTO THE FLOOR LIKE NEVER BEFORE. BELIEVE I HAVE DONE THAT SAME THING MORE OFTEN AND JUST LAUGHED IT OFF. LATER GATORS

You may need to visit the ER, Lavender. I am concerned about you. alert the ER staff if you are in danger at home. Your ammonia may be too high and your forgetting things, and falling can be part of HE.

I have read several of your posts over the years and know you take medications for pain like oxycodone at times, as well as lorazapam in the past. These types of medications will increase HE to a dangerous level. I am not sure you realize how serious this can be.

Some known problem medications with HE are Ambien, xanax, oxycodone, and some anti-depressants. Many doctors are not aware enough to understand HE complications. Speak to a hepatologist about meds and your HE problems. I realize you have had a long time living with HE now.
