Has anyone heard of Portal hypertention-?

--My blood pressure has been very high,and my doctor

has given me pills but they have not really done much-

I was looking around in a hep-c site,,

and they starting talking about high blood pressure,,

hep-c,,liver disease,,((portel Hypertention)),hhmmmmm,

could be me ,,I thought---

although it does mean my liver is in pretty bad shape,

if this is why my blood pressure is high--

I go to get my ultra-sound this monday comming up,,

guess things will be a bit clearer then eh,,hope so----

any info would be great,,,thanks guys,and gals------

Hi Gale,

High blood pressure is not the same thing as portal hypertension. Portal hypertension is high pressure in the veins coming from the liver due to cirrhosis and increases ones risk of having varicies and bleeds. It is usually controled by special blood pressure medications such as Inderol. Talk with your hepatologist about this. It is usually confirmed by endoscopy.

While my husband Gene has portal hypertension; he cannot tolerate the medication because it drops his blood pressure too dangerously low. But then there is nothing about Gene's illnesses that is typical.

when I first got my blood pressure done about 2 months ago,,,

I had just moved to a new area,,left a long time relationship,,
and my brother had just died,,he had had a heart transplant years
ago,,but I hoped he would live forever(ofcourse),.,.,.

My doctor said my blood pressure was 200,over 128,,Yikes

I am on meds now,,,its about,,175,over 114---

So this portal Hypertention does not make you have a high blood pressure read---????

How is your Hubby doing,,,Is he quite ill-???

Gale, My husband has portal hypertension, but does not have high blood pressure. He never has been hypertensive.

My dad has portal hypertension as well, but he has extremely low blood pressure.  Take care!

My daughter who is 23 has had two liver transplants in the last 5 years and was just diagnosed with portal hypertension. She is presently so sick and tired, and sick and tired of being that way. Anyone know what the prognosis is for this? The doctor's are not giving us much information or hope really. Diet control and not much else because of her liver issues. I just want someone to be open and honest on just how serious this is...thanx

Portal Hypertension has to do with the Portal vein that blood flows through from the Liver to the Kidneys. If you look under resources there should be some info on it. With your daughter already having 2 transplants, I don't know if the TIPS procedure is an option. It is certainly worth mentioning to her GI doctor. The resource threads have alot of useful information, and being informed will help you ask the right questions. There is information there on the TIPS procedure.

Your daughter is very young to have had a transplant!! I am certainly sorry she is going through all this at all, and at such a young age. What was the cause of her needing a TP? What area of the country do you all live. Where did she have her TP's in the past.

Also, you attached this thread to an old post, you may want to start it as a new thread . . the old thread is from 2006. You will get more response to a new thread.

One of the moderators in recovering from TP herself, but start a new thread and the other moderators will be along with some helpful information soon.

Welcome dehmar9,  So sorry you have such a young daughter with such a taxing condition.  I am a relatively new poster, but there are many people on this forum with lots of knowlege and they will be along.  My hubby is 65 with ESLD and we have controlled many of the symptoms with meds, but he is sick and tired all the time, too.  I really don't know prognosis for someone so young that has already had the transplants.  Seems like everyone is so different.  Hope you post often.  Give folks a while to repond, as our main moderator just had her transplant and is off line for a while.  We care about you and your daughter.  Post anytime.

Hello dehmar9 and welcome. I actually missed your post. That's why we ask all new members to start their own thread so that we don't miss them.

You and your daughter need to set up an appointment with her hepatologist and sit down with him and have a pow wow about her condition. Make him explain to you exactly what is going on, how serious it is and what their treatment plan is for it. Write down what he says or even tape it with his permission. Then google the things that he says.... do your own research.........Education is power.

I don't remember anyone here who's had 2 transplants especially at such a young age. I don't know either if the TIPS procedure is an option post transplant. Maybe try googling (TIPS procedure post transplant) to see if there is any information on the web about it.
