Hello all... i haven't posted much, I saw my mom yesterday and she is showing signs of adema,  her feet and ankles are swollen hard up to the knee and bruised black.     Her b/f says that she can only have about 4-5 beers and then she is sick, sometimes while drinking her nose bleeds heavily and other times just a bit.  She has to nap throughout the day.       Last december the dr. told her if she didn't quit drinking he wouldn't expect her to live much longer than a year.... i know it will get much worst before it gets better but is this the start of the bad stuff that is going to happen?

Hello Lucy and welcome back. If her doctor said that if she didn't quit drinking last December and now it is October there is a very good chance that it's the begining of the end with her continued drinking. Has the doctor spelled out exactly what she should expect to go through if she didn't stop drinking? I am so sorry that you have to see your mom go through this horrible disease. The only thing that you can probably do for your mom right now is to let her know how much you love her and how much it is hurting you to see her like this. Alcoholism is a very tough addiction for some people to break. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your mom.

Looks to me like the bad stuff started a long time ago. If it has progressed to this stage, it seems like it's getting close to the end. Since she is still drinking, is she still seeing a doctor or taking any kind of meds? Has she had any internal bleeding, such as esophageal varices? It's kind of pointless, I guess, to take meds & then continue to drink.

I have chronic Hep C which & cirrhosis. The doctor has prescribed meds to control the edema, & so far they are working as well as can be expected. I haven't had a drink in 5+ years - if I had, so can bet I would not be here now typing this message!
