My dad was diagnosed with hepatitis a number of years ago and now the liver is in the cronic stages of cirrhosis.  He  has developed esophagual varices and has a number of bleeds and bandings.  In March, he underwent a TIPS and since then has really  not been backed to himself.  Since last week he has started on a laxative and seems a little better but still very weak and needs assistance in bathing.  He has had trouble sleeping at night but is tired all day.  I was wondering if others have experienced these same systems.

Hello Feared Daughter, Welcome to HealingWell.

The answer to your question is yes. Many others have had some or all of the symptons. They are the norm for ESLD.
Is your father being seen by a hepatologist or a GI? Who is taking care of your dad?
Most patients are put on some sort of diet. Usually a low sodium diet. To help keep from retaining fluids. Also it's hard for a damaged liver to process protein (red meat in pecticular) But to keep muscle you need to eat protein. So some say for them to eat...poultry,fish,pork, beans, etc .

Yes my mother had all those symtoms, and went very quickly. But they also say that is not the norm. If your father is starting to experience confusion and speech trouble be sure to check into lactulose, that is what kept my mothers mind clearer than what it would be without it. Also on this forum people keep mentioning the itching and my mother never had that or at least never complained about that. Something with the body temperature also because she was always cold, so there is something else to look for. I asked the doctors about that symtom and they never really had a answer for that. Good luck
