Finally on the transplant list!!!

My friends,

Today I report that my husband is finally on the liver transplant list!  His MELD score is 23 and he is 2nd in line on the 'A' list.  He has been in the hospital since December 16th.  He is Jaundice and weak, but hanging in there.  This has been a long time in coming! 

Thank you all for your prayers and support.  I will keep you posted.  For now, I'm off to the hospital again.

Penny, that is wonderful!  Congratulations!  I hope that your husband gets his transplant really soon and can begin to return to a normal life.

BTW, what is PSC?  I saw you mentioned that in your reply to LaBunna, but am not sure what it means.

PSC (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis) is a slow, progressive disease in which the bile ducts of the liver are narrowed as a result of inflammation and scarring. As bile backs up, it damages liver cells and, ultimately, leads to liver failure. PSC affects about 3 per 100,000 people, far more males than females, and usually strikes in the prime of life. It is not hereditary and there is no known cure. It is believed to be a autoimmune disease where the body attacks its own organ.

Chicago Bears Hall of Fame running back, Walter Payton, was diagnosed with PSC. Payton was the all-time leading rusher in the history of the National Football League. He was listed for a transplant and developed bile duct cancer. His cancer was treated but he died waiting for a liver transplant in November 1999 at age 45.

My husband was diagnosed in September of 1994. His health has declined every year since. He is 6' tall and would normally weigh between 184 and 200 pounds. He currently weighs 142 pounds. He's lost all of his muscle tone as his liver is not producing the protiens necessary to build muscle. He has experience every dreadful ESLD symptom with the exception of kidney failure. He is very fragile and will not survive long without the transplant.

Penny, thanks so much for the explanation!  That sounds like a relatively rare disease, and certainly an awful one--as are all liver diseases.  I hope and pray that your husband gets a new liver soon.  He has been sick for a long time.

concratulations I think that is great my prayers will be with you.  My mother is 72 and her Meld is 20 and they say she is not a candidate for transplant.  I am so happy for you.
