childhood leukemia and now Hepatitis B & C and maybe return of leukemia. Question on blood counts

At 16 months old son had AMML (leukemia,) survived all and now 35 yrs old, and diagnosed with Hep. B and C and chirossis. Questions on blood counts . don't know if counts go crazy with meds or something else going on..Dr's not saying much. Mono count said critically high, platelets are 62,000 on shot to raise white count but hasn't raised much,if leukemia has returned heard they can't treat it as it affects the liver,been on interferon and other drugs since June counts still not at a minus are close to where Dr's want count to be.?

Achord, welcome to the forum.  I am so sorry that your son has gone through so much and is still going through it.  I assume the hep B and C is from transfusions back before they had screening for hepatitis.

Although I have hep C and cirrhosis, I've had no personal experience with high or low blood counts.  I suggest you nail down his hepatologist, if he has one, and question him directly about what concerns you.  It may be difficult to get info as privacy issues come into play, since your son is an adult.  You may have to ask questions in his presence, unless you have Power of Attorney.

Sorry not to be of more help, but perhaps someone else has more to offer.

my son is in the military and trying to get in touch with Dr. has been so aggravating..to us both..

That certainly does complicate matters.  I'm rather surprised that they haven't given him a medical discharge, but I know nothing about how the military works.

Wanted to add my welcom to the forum. I know that some medications can affect the liver and enzymes, but Connie is right that he should really try to pin down his doctor about what it all means. I go in armed with a specific list of questions that I have which helps me remember what I want to ask and seems to make the docs more specific in their answers. Good luck to both you and your son.

Thank You Frustrated,

With the military, he gets his blood test on the base, but his Dr's are 2 hrs away and it's impossible to catch one of his Dr's. He has to wait 2 to 3 wks after blood work till his liver counts come in to see the Dr. In the mean time we are looking at these counts that show critical  and High and it gets our minds going crazy till time to see Dr.

My son will be getting a medical retirement after 14 yrs in military and 3 tours in Iraq, but that won't be till his 4 yrs at this base is up in July. He did read something showing counts could show rheumatoid arthritis. Could it be? So we wait, and wait, and wait.
