Hello I am new to the forum.  My husband has severe cirohsis and is showing signs of liver problems.  ie:  extreme swelling,  spots on his skin, itching all over and forgetfulness.   We have young children and I am scared to death.  The problem is my husband does not see this as a big deal.  He is a "social" drinker and refuses to give this up.  The doctors will not help me since he continues to drink a few drinks a night.  He also has MS.  Can anyone tell me what to expect.  I spoke with the Dr. yesterday that looked at hubbys liver biopsy and he states "Your husband is in bad shape"

He will not be a candidate for transplant.  Please advise anyone!

Hello Montysgal and welcome to HealingWell. I am truely sorry that you are going through this with your husband. Your husband probably knows that it is really a big deal but maybe scared to death himself so he's continuing to drink.

Doctors don't like to treat people who don't want to help themselves. With your husband continuing to drink he's being counter productive to what the doctor is trying to do. So if your husband is not trying why should the doctor give it his all?

While your husband is actively drinking he is not a candidate for transplant. They will not waste a good liver on someone that they think with only destroy it like they did their own. He has to be alcohol free for at least 6 months and either go to AA or go to counseling for it. (Documented).

When was he diagnosed with cirrhosis? Is he on any meds for it at all?
