I have firmly believed that HCV is not sexually transmitted. My husband and I have been together for 26 years and never used precautions and he is negative. I am reading more up to date info that backs my claim. I have 2 teenage kids who carry HCV and I told my 19 year old that it is not a sexually transmitted disease. It is blood to blood. I have always advocated using protection for many reasons. I need to have this same talk with my 16 year old son. Am I correct? Are there any new studies that back my claim? Either way I want them to use precautions when they are sexually active.
People with diabetes don't have to divulge their health history to their sexual partner. If HCV is not sexually transmitted, then why does a HCV have to carry this burden?

You can spread Hep C by sex, it's not easy, but you can. That's why you tell partners. It's the right thing to do. I have had a 12 and then 16 year relationship(s) without using condoms and neither woman has the virus. As soon as I was aware I had Hep C, both were tested and were negative. I was still living with one and we didn't change anything, except we were more careful about other interactions involving blood, such as she had used my razor on a couple of occasions in the past. From what I've read, the virus doesn't tend to be concentrated in sex organs, blood and other organs (especially the liver) are where it lives. Anal sex, due to tearing of tissue is more likely to spread the disease. Also, having other STDs makes it easier to get. Your argument about diabetes vs. Hep C is without merit, so don't dare tell your kids to remain silent, it's irresponsible at the least.

There is a very minimal chance of transmitting HCV sexually, although it is not an STD.  I was married when I was diagnosed, and my husband wasn't concerned enough to be tested.  We divorced 2 yrs. later, but as far as I know, he never contracted it.  I've only had one other partner since then and he was well aware of my HCV status.  Again, he wasn't concerned.  The one time that it's very possible to contract the virus is if a woman with HCV has sex during her period.  However, as David said, it's the responsible thing for your children to make their status known.  With the prevalence of STDs these days, it's best to use condoms anyway.

When I researched this with my partner of 6 years who recently passed from this... the research said that risk was lower with one partner... but I agree that protection is necessary for young people and partners need to know..
