Mike's daughter is driving him to Miami now.  As luck would have it, MamaLama/Carol is in Charleston, SC for a getaway.  Can't get a flight to Miami until tomorrow AM and it's from Savannah, GA.  She's driving there now and will leave in the AM.

I'm sure we'll hear more from her soon.  We can all pray or hope that this is a good match for Mike and that he is on his way to a new life.

ML tells me that the surgery on the donor liver was supposed to be at 10 PM.  If it's a good match, they will move Mike to surgery shortly thereafter.  She hopes to be there when he wakes up in the morning.

ML here. Just heard donor liver is a go! Mike heading to ER shortly. I'll be there in 8 hours. Hoping for positive outcome.

Connie, thank you for sharing this wonderful news. ML- I am SOO happy for you guys! Praying for a successful surgery and save travels to you as you get to Miami!!! BTW, I hope you got some wonderful shrimp & grits while you were in Charleston!

Again, praying his surgery is a success and you have a safe trip to Miami

That's GREAT news that it's a match, Carol!! We will be thinking of you both and praying for a very successful surgery.
BTW, I'm sure you meant OR, not ER. I can only imagine how many thoughts are going through your head right now and how frustrating it must be to be stuck in Savannah. Hope to hear more from you tomorrow.

They called at 2:30. His surgery had begun. It is not quite 5 a m now on way to airport. I've been gone from home 21 hours. A lot if stuff can happen in a day!

You will be there in plenty of time to greet Mike as he wakes up. Aside from the time the operation takes (5-8 hours), the anesthesia takes hours to begin to wear off. This is great news ML!

It's been 10 hours and there is no news. I had two calls that surgery continues. Getting a little frazzled with no feedback and no action plan to implement.

Carol, are you at the hospital now?  The surgery could've taken longer than anticipated.  Hope you get some news soon!

David, on Mayo's web site, they say that liver transplant takes 12 hours.  Maybe they are giving extra time for possible complications (?)

Just talked to nurse. They are closing. It has been 11 hours and 15 minutes. But I think at the beginning it is a lot of getting the patient prepped. All those tubes!

Then it will be a while before he is settled in icu.

But surgeon will talk to me after closing.

Thanks for the update, ML.  I'm sure you are exhausted, both physically and emotionally.  Do let us know what the surgeon says, if you can.  Still praying that all went well and for a smooth recovery.

Carol-what wonderful news to read on my first look at the computer since Wednesday!  Glad that there was the call...a match...the surgery is complete.  Prayers and positive thoughts to you and Mike.  God Bless.

Weird side note...I am just back from Savannah...and was at the Savannah airport this morning at 415am...we probably were in the security line or at the various gates at the same time.

Hi Connie,
I was originally told 8-12 hours, then 5 years later when I had mine, the actual operation took just under 6 hours. They waited 13 hours and the new liver wasn't responding, so they reopened the incision and everything was fine. Another 3 hours and the liver was working. In total, I was under anesthesia for 36 hours straight. It took another week before I could tell what was a dream and what was real. So my transplant took 6 hours initially, or 22 hours, or 36 hours, or a week, depending on what you want to go by. I go by 6 hours and a week of recovery, then I was out after 10 days, start to finish.

Mike out of surgery. 12 hours!!!  Now he goes to the surgi intensive care unit where they will watch him carefully 24 hours a day for a week


If all goes well he will go to a normal room for some days or weeks.  He must be on meds and be monitored for the rest of his life. 


His doctors are optimistic but guarded. It is important for the new liver to begin working right away.  The odd of success are statistically high. If this doesn't work it was not meant to be. And he's a fighter. I have faith this will turn out okay. 


Shawna is with me and Ella (5).  So we are keeping things as calm as we can.

I've been to see him. He is a trainwreck. Goodi read jerrys blog last week as I never dreamed there were so many places one could put tubes!

And my man is pink. He has been grey or yellow for as long as I can remember. They told us they needed time to clean him up so we are getting a bite to eat. On miami beach. Like we are on vacation for an hour. On miami beach! The place thrums. Music and kids and sweet sea air. This is better than a nap

Mikes vitals are bad and he is fighting his vent and his Bp is high etc. So since I have no idea what is normal post op. So best I'm not there monitoring their efforts to keep him alive right now

I imagine you went to South Beach.  They were just starting all the renovation when I left there.  Have some Cafe Cubano.  That will wake you up!

They were just finishing the boatlift when I left Connie. Most beautiful place I have ever lived. My first son was born at Jackson Memorial. I don't think the hospital is still there. The dog tracks are gone, and the pier. Joe's stone crabs has moved. Piccolo's is gone.

I can't believe those landmarks moved, Jim!  Well, ML's husband is at Jackson Memorial/UMiami...could it be in a new location?  I lived in Miami Beach and Miami for 10 yrs.

ML, I'll be looking forward to more news tomorrow!  (All good, I hope.)
