Glitch for Mike???? Not sure yet.

They had us get a glucometer, we left ours at home and start tracking Mike's sugar again.

It was up and down in the hospital but never low low like at home preTX.

So our first 2 readings, before and after dinner were 204 and 215.  In the ICU they gave insulin if over 150.  On the floor they called the doc over 200.

We see the doc tomorrow morning so I didn't call. It is almost tomorrow morning anyway.

How worried should I be?  He'll be okay over night, right?  Since it was 2 days since anyone had checked his sugar it could have been high since we got home.

The only new med is Urosodol since the hospital.  Oh, and they changed from Medrol to Prednasone (25 mg).  Don't know if that might be pushing it up.

I know he didn't do the right things today as he had a lot of juices to drink (extra thirsty???  Hmmm.)

Anyone who had been down this path please let me know if I should call during the night.

Hi Carol,

I would think that even in the 200s he'd be fine overnight.  Not to compare to a human but when I first started working in medical research I worked in a diabetes lab.  We only started our rats on insulin when they got to 300mg/dL unfasted.  Prednisone can cause steroid induced diabetes (it goes away when the steroid is stopped) so it's good they are monitoring glucose.  Maybe watch how much juices he drinks as that will boost his sugars.  So it also depends on when you actually checked his glucose to when his last juice was.

Carol, ursodiol. From what I've read, it prevents gall stones. And Prednisone. Somewhere I remember that it can cause elevations in blood sugar. Hope he doesn't have to be on it long. But also remember that quite a number of transplant patients develop diabetes. David has it and I believe he said it's from the antirejection meds.

Mike's sugar was 126 before breakfast.

So I'm happier with that number and will watch carbs today...and juices, which he got into big time yesterday. If he is so thirsty, he'll need to drink water between meals.

Yes, steroids will raise blood sugar levels. Glad he's doing so well! Pam

WHen I was in the hospital last time with pneumonia, they had me on a really strong steroid. I went from normal blood sugar to it being over 400! They definitely have that affect on some people. For sure watch the carbs and juices. A little is ok, just dont over do it!

Urso is a bile acid and keeps bile thin.  That's how it helps prevent gall stones and any sludgy bile which can back up and cause liver damage.

Dany, thanks for the clarification. I know you mentioned that in a post, but couldn't remember exactly what you said (creeping senility, not HE.) ;)

Carol, I am so happy to hear that Mike's sugar level has dropped. Also check the juice nutritional panel for sodium. Sometimes they have a lot of that, too.

Connie, I'm guessing it's more of a "you got too much on your plate" than senility thing!! smhair

Carol, you could try flavoring his water if he gets sick of the water...like adding mint leaves, or cucumbers (like they do at spas), or lemon/orange slices.  Just remember to wash the outside of the lemons, oranges or cucumbers...it's easy to just slice those up and toss them in.  Scrubbing the rind is a good idea!!

Juice is a bad thing for diabetics - so full of sugar - natural sugar - still its sugar. How about Crystal Lite?

That's a great idea about scrubbing the Lemon rind - I read something on Yahoo the other day - 70% of lemons tested (restaurant testing) had e-coli (rinds).

I drink cranberry juice, with water added at a 50/50 rate. If my glucose levels are up I use juice at 1/3 to 2/3 water. I drink more than a quart of (just) water during the day.

This is a new phase...we've tracked sodium, protien grams, and now good and bad carbs. 

Today he was better informed, but still was 189 before dinner!

Doc gave us some parameters today, so I am more confident about managing this.

Carol-glad that you are getting guidance on the blood sugar.  As you mentioned, one more thing to keep track of...but for such a wonderful reason!  I am so happy to read about Mike's continued progress.  Healing thoughts and prayers for you both.
