My mom has cirrhosis of the liver and portal hypertension. She has been having very bad diarrhea for the last week or so and it seems as if everything she eats or drinks goes through her. She says it's dark green and sometimes a little tan. Can this be cause by her cirrhosis? She went to the doc today but the pa wasn't sure and told her to go get lab work tomorrow. Any help is appreciated greatly.

Hi, Oconnor.  That sounds to me like it might be gall bladder/bile duct related.  However, we are not doctors so we'll have to leave the diagnosis to them.  Is she seeing a GI or hepatologist?

Thats the strangest thing because all they have sent her to is a vein doctor to look at the veins in her legs and a regular doctor is treating her for her cirrhosis. There has not been any indication that they will send her to any other doctor...really bums her out not knowing and all. Tomorrow I have to take her to the hospital to get a lab work done and if she is still diarheaing bad they might keep her....atleast thats what the PA told her today.

Her primary care doctor needs to refer her to a hepatologist.  Is she in the US?  I ask because I know things work differently in other countries.

Yes, she is in the us. She was sent to a doctor and he is going to laser off some veins in her legs. So far her primary care doctor is going to monitor her every month and if there is any problems like bleeding then he will send her to someone else.

Anyone with cirrhosis and portal hypertension should be under the care of a hepatologist, even if just to check her every 6 mos.  I don't understand the GP's reluctance to send her to one.  What if she asks for a "second opinion" by a GI or hep doc?

I think that is what I am going to ask her doctor next time she goes. I want to get to the bottom of this situation and find out exactly what we need to know. It is ridiculous for them to take lightly with all her health problems already and then adding on her cirrhosis and PH. Thanks for all the replies they have been greatly appreciated.
