Shadowcptn, welcome to Healing Well. I am glad you found us. You certainly are (and have been) dealing with a lot of issues. It's good that you got a diagnosis of hep C, in that at least that can be treated. Is the SBO you're referring to small bowel obstruction? That and rib fractures, scarring rashes, bone pain, polynephritis, etc., are not related to hep C or cirrhosis. It almost sounds like you might have an autoimmune disease. Have you had bone density tests? We can really only focus on liver disease in this forum, but I've had some other issues, as well.
The good news is that you have an appt. with a hepatologist at a hospital soon. Does this happen to be a hospital that does liver transplants?
The first thing I would suggest is that you read the info in the folder at the top of our main page entitled Hepatitis Resources. This contains lots of good info on liver disease and its progression. You should also do a search on this forum for hepatitis C, which will bring up threads and posts related to it.
I was diagnosed with hep C in '93, but know that I contracted it in '68 or '69. Because you have also had hep C for decades without treatment, it is very possible that you now have cirrhosis and/or liver cancer. They will be able to detect the cirrhosis upon biopsy. Cancer will show up on an MRI of your liver with Gadolinium contrast. In '93, I did not have cirrhosis. In '07, I did. This is thanks to untreated hep C. I also have had liver cancer twice, first in '05 where it was treated at Mayo in '06 (the huge tumor was shrunk) and the entire rt. lobe removed in '07. I had no recurrence of cancer until March of this year, when it was detected on MRI in the remaining liver fragment. I had one treatment of chemoembolization to shrink it in July, but meanwhile was placed on the transplant list and received my new liver on Oct. 27th (about 6 wks. ago.)
In my experience, I would not have known that I had cirrhosis without a biopsy. Same with the cancer, both times...except that I did notice increased fatigue. No pain with either. I was very fortunate that my liver cancer had not metastasized to other organs (except the first time into the inferior vena cava...large blood vessel of the liver, but shrunk back into the original tumor.) If it had, they would not have done a transplant. IF you should have hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), I pray that it has not metastasized.
If you have not done so already, I hope you will apply for Food Stamps immediately. You can add your caregiver's name to the application, as well, or he can apply separately. Also apply for SSI/SSD since you are unable to work. However, you might want to wait until after you see the hepatologist in Jan., so you will have a good medical record of that visit. If you are able to obtain copies of hospital reports and lab results, so much the better. SS will get them, but it will take longer. Your bipolar disorder, in addition to your other conditions, will go a long way towards getting you approved for benefits. It should not keep you from being treated for hep C.
There is a federal/state program, that I believe is run by Medicaid, that will pay a caregiver. Please look into this, since your caregiver/fiance is no longer able to work while caring for you. There is help out there. You just have to know where to look.
Your caregiver can post under your name (just let it be known that it's him, not you.) You can bring up your thread and he can post there. He could also post (under your name) in the Caregivers thread. I think that would be beneficial to him. All you have to do is bring up the thread and hit Reply and then he can post himself and hit submit (or you can do that.) It's simple enough, especially if he doesn't register.
I hope when you see the hepatologist, that doctor will be able to refer you to the proper specialists. for your other medical issues.
Best of luck and big hugs,
Connie
