Dear OG,
I'm sorry you've had to find this site, but here we are, a group of patients and caregivers dealing with liver disease in its many forms.
Your hubby/partner is in the for the fight of his life--to get his obesity under control quickly enough to become eligible for transplant.
Since he has overcome his active alcoholism, that is a huge step in the right direction. Check with your hepatologist to see if he will need documentation of his sobriety also. Mike went to AA 3+ times a week and had them sign his calendar each time. And he had a blood draw weekely to prove he was not having any "slips."
It must be difficult to lose all the weight in a short time period. Mike dropped a lot of weight during his "wait." He was less interested in eating and often threw up a meal. He went from 240 about
10 years ago to 155 today. That was a long time, from the time of his failed Hep C treatment until his End Stage Liver Disease was diagnosed.
Does he have Hep C too?
If you go back through my posts -- MamaLama--you will see his progression and Mikes was about
the same. Long long way to the transplant table and Mike almost didn't make it as he developed liver cancer too.
Do you know from his labs what his MELD is now. That may tell you how close to needing a transplant he is. If his weight were under control, and if he was at a transplant center near me, in Florida, they would likely transplant him at 22-25. On the west coast and NY where there is more demand for organs, some folks are waiting until high 20s or low 30s for organs. Thus the mortality rate along the way is quite bad.
Come here often, let us know how he is doing. Feel free to share your own frustrations on our caregivers thread. There have been plenty of moments when the HE got to me, really bad and I needed to vent. Mike just didn't realilze he was being so outrageous.
Best to you both,
Mama Lama aka Carol from Florida
