ESLD Not looking good

Hi All,

My mother has been in hospital twice in the last 2 weeks, she had 17 pints drained from her, and was supposed to go back on friday 3rd February (5 days after she was discharged to be drained again). She unfortunately drank A LOT and tried to take her life on the thursday, she had taken an overdose of her propanolol and drank a massive amount of alcohol. I'm at a loss of what to do as she wont let anyone go and see her in hospital and has told the nurses not to tell us anything. I called today and they did mention that she might be discharged tonight? is that not too early?

She clearly had meant to take her life and this was not a cry for help, she will never attend any doctors appointments and only went to the hospital the week before as the fluid was crushing her lungs and she couldnt breathe. She couldn't go to the toilet either. She had written goodbye letters to everyone and had marked that date in her diary with a star.

Has anyone got any advice on how to go from here? i love my mum so much despite whats shes been doing and want to help her.

Fairydust, I believe you are overseas, is that correct? In the US, a person can be committed to treatment by a family member with 2 doctor statements, per the Meyer's Act (or Marchman Act in FL.)

In reality, nobody can really be helped if they don't want to be. A serious suicide attempt is done by a person who has absolutely no hope and cannot see things getting any better in the future. And things won't get better and she won't have any hope until she detoxes and stays sober. This cannot be done alone--she needs a program (preferably a 12-step one.)

The doctors in the hospital should at least request a psych consult.
