Hi Mr. B and welcome to the forum.
We are a group of patients and caregivers and provide as much support as we can.
One of our Moderators will be along shortly to welcome you also.
Regarding Ammonia level home tests, I know of none. Ammonia level is tricky. some will have hepatic encephalopathy symptoms at a low level and others can be normal at a very high level.
Mike's doctor said it was more about how the person felt and acted than an actual number.
One of our posters once said he could play computer solitaire and if that went well, he knew he could drive that day. If the numbers mixed him up or frustrated him, he knew it was an HE day and time for extra lactulose.
At our house, prior to transplant in May 2011, Mike was pretty much affected by the HE all the time, especially the last year. He was beligerant and oppositional on his worst days. Now, after transplant, he can't even remember being like that! He has no memory of it all. Unfortunatley I remember all too well his screaming at me while I was driving and acting kinda crazy at home. Even then, he had his moments whenhe knew how ill he was and could verbalize that he was thankful to be in a pre-transplant program and had someone to look after things aroundthe house (and HIM).
Would you want to tell us more about yourself and how you are doing?
