Connie's Post Transplant Blog, Pt. 3

I went for labs yesterday, followed by a visit with the Mayo Wound Care nurse. There's an area in the wound that neither the nurses nor I could identify. The WC nurse thinks it's mesh (from my previous hernia repair) coming through in the wound. She called my transplant surgeon and got me an appt. for next Tues. with the doc's P.A. WC nurse said that the P.A. could probably cut that little piece out. I certainly hope so and that I won't have to be opened again. I have stopped the home nurses until after I see the surgical P.A. and resolve this issue.

David, they are in different places, so I don't think that's feasible. The mesh is new...surgeon removed the old one during transplant and put in a new one. This is in my midriff.

At least you're getting it taken care of and will be in the hospital. I'm no fan of hospital stays, but on a couple of occasions they worked out well. You won't have to do anything but lie there and begin to get better. Stay on your docs and get them to fix their glitches. Surgeons have this attitude that, "I fixed the plumbing, those minor things aren't a big problem."

I had blood work, a chest x-ray, and an ECG this morning. I had 4 hours to kill between the testing and the surgeon appt. I managed to get a couple of cat naps in a recliner. I had been up since 5 AM and 6 AM yesterday...definitely not enough sleep. When I met with the surgeon and P.A., they said I need a CT of abdomen and a physical exam by Hepatology so I can be cleared for surgery. They also want me to take Levaquin until I have surgery, and to take magnesium citrate the evening before surgery to get cleaned out.

So the tests are scheduled for Fri. and my surgery will be next week--probably Mon. or Tues., since it has to be done within 7 days of the tests. I'll keep everyone posted. For now, I'm relieved that I can get a few things done prior to surgery and psych myself up for it!

The testing is more of a hassle than the operation. Every time they do a test, it engenders another. Sorry you have to do this. I remember going back to have my incisional hernia repaired. That worried me more than when I had the transplant. Maybe it was because the transplant came out of nowhere.

I don't know if you are spiritual or not but whenever I hit a rough spot, it has helped me. So God Bless and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Emma, the hernia repair might still be done. The surgeon knows that's what I want if it is possible.

I got up at 5 this AM and didn't get home until 5 tonight. I had a physical exam to get clearance for surgery next Wed. Then I had an echocardiogram as something was a little off with my EKG. I then had a 4-hour wait until my final appointment at 2:30, which ran late. And of course the van was late--Fridays are the worst, with traffic being bad and especially 5 PM when they finally picked me up. I did get a cat nap in a recliner in the quiet area. There was nothing I wanted to do more than come home and nap and eat. I'm exhausted and hurting all over. However, my daughter is on her way here to pick up something of hers. She hasn't come to see me in nearly 2 yrs., but when she wants something she'll find a way. Hopefully, I'll get some rest this weekend.
