Harry gets a new liver 7/3/12

We are so grateful to finally get "the call". They say you'll get it when you least expect it and nothing could be further from the truth. I had actually decided to wait until the next day to wash my hair. The call came at 11:30pm. "are you ready?".

We live far enough from our transplant center that we needed to be airlifted. If you are waiting for your call I would strongly suggest that you make a dry run so you know exactly where to go and what information you need. I had recently checked with the transport just to double check they had us on their list. We waited just over 6 months for his transplant. When I called them they said to make sure I get the phone number and name of the person that calls. That was the first I'd heard I'd need that.

I think that all the prep work I'd done really was worth it.

Pack your bags and have them ready. Just buy double toiletries if you can - one set to use and one to take. Keep the things you need now but will need to take together so you can grab & pack quickly.

I'm going to try to put a list together of what to do to prepare and what ended up being really important or helpful.

Anyway it's now thurs 7/5. The new liver went in 7/3 with surgery starting about 2pm and ending around 7:30. He didn't get the breathing tube out until late last night. He smells so purity again! His eyes aren't yellow and his skin is slowly getting a more normal hue. He's still pretty confused but it seems more from the anesthesia than the encephalopathy he had before.

A nurse once told me that it takes a year for the anesthesia to totally get out of one's system. Considering that I had 10 surgeries in the last 10 yrs., I won't be in my right mind at least until next March.
