Tramadol

Syxx, the acetaminophen in Tramadol is the concern. There are only 325 mg in it, so you could safely take 2 with no problems. I was actually told, both prior to and post transplant, that I could take up to 1200 mg of acetaminophen a day. I actually take 1000 mg a day, the amount in 2 Lortab daily. It's ibuprofen that is a no-no. Prior to transplant, I did have cirrhosis.

We are not meant to suffer, but to use caution in what we take.

Hey Syxx,

Just checked brother's med list and just as I thought, he was discharged with 50mg of tramadol (ultram) prn every 4 hours for pain. Granted this is post-transplant, but he had cirrhosis prior to TP.

He hasn't shown evidence of any problems with it, 4 weeks out.

I have cirrhosis caused by AIH and my hep is happy for me to take tramadol which I believe is called Ultram in the US.

But that doesn't mean it is OK for anyone else.

PS tramadol does not contain paracetamol (acetaminophen ).

Yes, it said ultracet had tylenol. I took 1 pill, its not doing anything.

I have one left, taking it before bed.

I rotate heat, ice and have stretches I try. It helps while heating icing or stretching but pain comes back 10 to 20 min later.

Anyways, thanks for help in determining that tramadol is OK.

Sorry to disagree about tramadol Connie but tramadol, certainly here in UK, is the generic name for tramadol hydrochloride - and just that. Having looked up on Rx list the brand called Ultracet contains tramadol AND acetaminophen but the brand name Ultram only contains tramadol.

My generic tablets certainly only contain tramadol hydrochloride - I am looking at the packet now!

I did not realise Syxx was taking Ultracet as it was referred to as tramadol.

It is confusing isn't it?

PS I was only so certain about this as I can't take acetaminophen (or paracetamol as we call it here) - long story - and my hep is aware of this and advised tramadol.

 I can identify with feeling weird about the pain meds and thankfully I haven't had the need for any in a few years . In a way it's good you feel that way , Nothing wrong with being overly conscious of what the implications are for taking that stuff . In the end you gotta sleep and at the minimum be able manage the discomfort .

You are probably going to need surgery at some point. Meantime, go to the doctor and get more Tramadol or something else. Your motives are pure...you're in a lot of pain. I see no problem for you with meds, especially given the situation.

You need to let the nurse know that you cannot do PT without Tramadol, at least for now.
