Our brother got released from the hospital for a week. He was then sent back the other night for low hemoglobin. He was given 3 units of blood last night. Today the blood seemed to have "disappeared". He has no blood in his urine, feces and coming from his mouth. Where can this blood be going? The doctors plan is to do an endoscopy tomorrow.

It could be coming from bleeding varices or bleeding ulcers. The endoscopy will rule those out. I've had low hemoglobin and hematocrit since transplant, but not low enough to require a transfusion.

Update: no varises and nothing bleeding in GI system. He is still bleeding somewhere.

What did they really give him? Fresh frozen platelets? Albumen? Whole blood? Plasma? When they give you a blood product it enriches the blood already in your body to add the chemicals or components you need...

So maybe it isn't pouring into his lungs or belly, rather trying to enrich the blood he already has. The chemicals are supposed to cross from the blood into the organs and such that need those chemicals to do their jobs...respiration, digestion, excretion, creation of energy sources, etc. etc.

I'm not a doctor, but this is a darn good question!

Not sure what they gave him, but he had 6 units of blood given to him within 4 days.  It's not "keeping".  They were trying to find out where it was going, because it's not "keeping" as they say.  They put a tube down his throat Monday to try to find it, and right after they did the procedure, they took him off the cardiac/low sodium diet and put him on a regular diet.  He ate fried chicken for lunch.  Yesterday, they gave him 1 unit of blood and tested an hour later.  They deemed him ok and the doctor had the hospital pay for them (mom and brother) to take a cab home (a 2 1/2 hour drive).  I've never heard of a hospital doing that.

Also, the doctor said he didn't need the Lactulose 3 times a day, and brought it down to twice a day.  He hadn't had a BM in over two days, the last time I talked to my mom.

I think he should have more Lactulose. Or Miralax. Not good to go 2 days without a BM.

I agree with Connie, more lactulose is needed. He needs to have at least 2-3 bowel movements every day.

I agree, he needs more. Our other brother is taking him to get blood work done today (they are going to do it at no charge). He thinks another blood transfusion is needed. Apparently, Chris is getting real weak and tired again. I'm hoping they'll get him to a different hospital this time.
