Good to hear, Susie, on all counts. I guess different centers have different protocols. Of course, at the time I had the TheraSphere, it was a study drug...back in 2006 or '07. When I had a second HCC appear in the remaining left lobe, when I confirmed that I wanted a TP, I was denied the TheraSphere and they did chemoembolization instead.

Susie and I had an email exchange yesterday and this morning that might be helpful to others, so she is letting me put it in here.  So I am going to cut an paste. From Carol: Mike's tumor markers were high before TP   And his tumor was 1cm in Feb 2011 and 2cm in April 2011. They gave him tumor points on his meld score but said they could not do ultra sound guided chemoembolization because it was deep in the lobe, near the portal vein ,and they did not want to damage that right before TP. No other cancer treatment was offered.   They gave him pep talks to urge him to hold on a few more days   He got the call for a viable liver April 30th and was transplanted overnight into the 1st of May of 2011. He was so sick and mentally unstable.   His cancer markers have been up and down since transplant and he has an MRI every 3 months.   He has not had HCV treatment since 2003. His new liver is at risk of course from both return of HCC and the ongoing HCV.   But he feels pretty good and has been good mentally   From Susie:     Thank you Carol for all your help yesterday.   They have my Therespheres treatment on hold due to the small size of the tumor   2.1 cm, its history of slow growth and my low AFP result. They will most likely have me do another MRI in August.   They did say that treatment would not deactivate me from the list when and if I needed it.   What a relief after nearly a 3 year wait ! And today from Susie: Subject: Therespheres   Went in yesterday for my pre planning angiogram of liver.  The also checked my tips shunt.  So I have wounds in the groin and neck.  Then, transplant called and wanted me to have blood drawn. It seems my blood has more antibodies because of all the blood I got with the spleen hospitalization. Interventional radiology did not know I was offered a liver on Monday nite.  In our discussion with the IR doctor's nurse, she admitted that if I was now receiving offers of organs it did not make a great deal of sense to do the treatment too soon as I would be placed inactive for 1 month following the treatment for transplant.  This is the first time I was told this!   When my husband and I consulted with the IR doc on June25, my husband asked directly about the impact of the treatment on transplant.  the doc mentioned that they had to safegurd their staff from the radiation, but never told me it would bounce me off the list.  Right now, the Therespheres is tentatively scheduled for the week of  July 22. Since my lesion is small, my husband and I am going to talk with my hep about this.  I am going to ask him if chemo embolization would knock me off the list, and if not, why not start with that. Or, since the history of this lesion has been slow growth, ask about the risk of postponing the treatment. For the exception points, does UNOs require the, to treat the lesion at this size? @Susie...My mom's IR recommended Chemo embolization over Therasphere. He also said that you could have chemo embolization and if a liver became available that same day, still go for transplant that same night. With therasphere, since the beads are radio active it wouldn't be safe for the surgical staff to transplant so close to therasphere treatment...there needs to be a certain amount of time in between. I hope I am explaining it correctly.
