AISer sent me an email today about what was going on the UK. Very intersesting. The approvals for Sovaldi, at the current prices, will be limited to life saving circumstances. Since other drugs are on the horizon, waiting will be recommended but for special situations...thus encouraging others that the UK national market (which is large, as is the US and Canada) is ripe for a more fair price. That should put downward pressure on Giliad also, don't you think.

I am thrilled that this has become an International Issue.

I have seen some frightening numbers that suggest the virus has spread very widely.

so true!! with the blood supply cleaned up. and addicts able to get clean needles, why are the numbers going up. scary!!!

the 1st DAAs (inc & vic) were very expensive. 20,000 for 4 weeks. the total tx for 48 weeks was more than sovaldi tx. and no one was complaining. hopefully the competition will drive the price down. there should be 5 or 6 new txs within a year, and all are very high success rates.

Just to clarify, the UK body that agrees whether or not meds are cost effective hasn't actually reported yet on Sovaldi. Their draft conclusions are due in May then there will be lots of further representations and discussions before a final decision in October. So it is only my take on it that they will limit its use to a small group (as is the case now) pending new and cheaper treatments. But I think it is a logical inference from reading the terms of reference and looking at the sheer economics.

Several other countries follow the recommendations of this UK group so it will be interesting to see what happens. I will keep my eyes open for the draft report.

Yes, manaLama...i certainly agree re all meds, and the Xifaxan. I spoke with their help line...there are a few options but not for everyone. Praying for this to change soon!

A further update. The English NHS issued new guidance yesterday. Whilst the body that decides on cost effectiveness of treatments considers Sovaldi they have made money available (£19m - about $30m I think) to treat up to 500 patients now who are 'at significant risk of mortality or who require transplantation'. The treatment will be carried out in 15 centres to help ensure consistency in approach and to get effective feedback on success rates. Up until now decisions have been made locally within existing budgets so this new amount should result in a lot more people being treated.

Not sure what is happening in Scotland and Wales.
