Getting financial assistance for Sovaldi...how?

Hi, new to this site, have been living with Hep C for over 20 years. Tried the interferon/ribavirin route three years ago and was taken off after three months as I was only a partial responder. I was so excited to find out my doctor was prescribing Sovaldi, Simeprevir and Ribavirin as I had been following the excellent results of the clinical trials. My problem is that my drug prescription coverage is capped at $5,000. Not a great lot of good to me when Sovaldi alone would be 22,663.00 per month for three months! The case manager (Gilead) that called me advised they could offer 30 % assistance bringing the cost for that one pill to $47,000 for the three months.
I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. Has anyone been able to get full assistance from Gilead...they say on their web site (US)that "The Support Path Patient Assistance Program will provide Sovaldi at no charge for eligible patients with no other insurance options." Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions re this huge problem that is holding back my chance at treatment?

Hello Peace and Welcome to HW/Hepatitis! I'm sorry that I can't answer your question, but there are others here who can probably help. I know the finances are an issue for many people and that is really unfortunate. No one should be denied treatment for this awful disease because of lack of money. The prices are ridiculous in the first place. I'm guessing Gilead is only offering a 30% discount because of your insurance. Even though it caps out at $5000, it's the 'other insurance options' Gilead is referring to.

I'm really sorry that you're running into this issue - it's not fair and I can imagine how frustrating it is for you. Some days and times are slower than others around here, so please be patient - your're not being ignored! Just keep checking back!

Thanks for the response everyone. I have left a message at Gilead to see why I am not being offered full assistance and a voice mail in at my Hep doctors office to see if they have some pull. I am not ready to give up and am willing to start a letter writing campaign or daily calls to Gilead...whatever it takes. I hear that new things are around the corner in treatments, but that's what I've been hearing for years now and look what happens when it does arrive...we can't afford it! Absolutely right..it is a fight worth fighting and I'm not about to let it go. I qualify as far as "less than $100K a year (ha ha way less!), have a Dr. willing to fill out and fax the Gilead PAP paperwork"..maybe my husband will have to quit his job so we don't have any drug benefits in order to "fit" their criteria!

Peace, we have had a long journey with this finances wise. We gave up our house up north and spent every penny on Mike's care for many years. One year it was $50,000. Then, finally, he couldn't work, couldn't pay for his private insurance, and wound up on Medicaid. And those folks have been fantastic.

He has had all the drama up to transplant paid for, his post TP meds, and now treatment. I think he has had like 14 hospitalizations for one thing and another.

In November he becomes elegible for Medicare and his Social Security check may put him over the top for supplemental Medicaid...but we are hopeful that the expensive stuff is behind him.

Occasionally we have to wiggle around the state's rules...like the time Mike was admitted to the hospital for 3 days because they said he had no outpatient dollars left for a colonoscopy! That was cheaper, to keep the guy IN the hospital??? Oh, my. Well, he had rectal bleeding and so he needed the colonoscopy!
