Martijean,
Mike had nose bleeds during his downhill slide to transplant and at first we didn't know about
that symptom. When the liver is cirrhostic, one of the complications is Portal Hypertension.
Here is a descript
ion that isn't too technical:
www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/digestive-diseases-portalBasically the pressure from the failing liver can rupture one or more of the veins. Think about
someone with varicose veins in the leg...and imagine it rupturing... If there is bleeding that does not quickly resolve from mouth, anus, nose, it is 911 time. Some here report a major "bleed" where their loved one almost died. What the docs generally do is an upper endoscopy (EGD) and scope out the throat, esophagus, stomach and see if there are any bulging veins. They can band them so they don't bleed. This can be done several times and often it. A nose bleed can be one of those. Or it can be nothing.
Remember that folks with liver disease often have low platelets and high INRs also, which indicate that the blood does not clot well.
I would call your doc tomorrow and see if he wants to see DH and check this out. Meanwhile, if the bleeding does not stop quickly (clot), call or go to the emergency room right away.
One night before Mike's diagnosis, he poked his tongue with the little stick holding an olive in his martini. (yup, before he put a plug in the jug) That thing would not stop bleeding and he wouldn't let me take him to the hospital.
didn't know about
the 911 rule. It turned out okay, but might not have!
Thinking about
you and hoping for the best.
