Hello, I have ulcerative  colitis  (im actually in the hospital with it right now)  and I keep telling the Dr how badthe pain is in the pit of my stomache, he said the pain part almost sounds more like IBS than the colitis.  Can you describe your IBS pain?  This pain is in the pit of my stomach, like below my belly buton, and it hurts so bad it makes me nasues then diareah.  Thanks for your replies.

Everyone has different pain symptoms with IBS.  What you have described is one that is commonly experienced and could certainly be related to IBS.  Many people complain of pain around the belly button and at times, it can become almost unbearable.

I don't experience pain in this area.  Mine is usually most acute in the upper right quadrant or in the lower left side.  I don't typically experience nausea but many do.

Why would the doctor not think the pain related to your UC, which is known to be in a flare right now?

You can never underestimate the body's ability to radiate pain away from the original source. Even if your ulcers are all near the termination of your intestines, I don't know why that wouldn't cause you to hurt up around your belly button.

IBS pain isn't anywhere specific; people have it high, low, right, left, front, back and all over. It's stabbing, aching, cramping, burning. I don't see how your doctor could reasonably say that you are having IBS pain when there is no definition of IBS pain, except that it has no known cause. So I can't see saying this pain is separate from your UC pain; there's no possible way to distinguish.

Are they giving you something for it, at least?

IBS pain can be felt ANYWHERE in your stomach. I get the same pain where you described yours, but it usually die down after doing number 2. Do you get any breaks with the pain? or is it constant?. Yes nausea can be felt sometimes too and diarheaa....
