This past Thursday I had my colonoscopy and endoscopy. I was concerned because I only went to the washroom on the one day of my prep, not the second, but it was ok.
I got to the hospital, was nervous, and checked in with the nurse to get my IV. They ended up calling me in a few minutes early. My heartrate was up probably because I was so nervous. I gargled with the solution for my endoscopy and they numbed my throat three times with spray and did that procedure under local sedation. I think I drifted off for that, but I do recall feeling the tube moving through the esphogus, but no significant pain.
While they did the colonoscopy the male nurse kept talking with me to distract me, I did watch it all on the computer though. He kept joking around to make it easier. I talked through it and for the most part the pain was under control. Towards the end when they had me on my back I was dying of pain, so they increased the sedation three times.
They told me they feel everything is normal (So *** am I suffering so much?!) but they did take some biopsies to test for IBS, Crohns and Colitus.
For a few days following it was rough. I am Bipolar and I think the sedation had to have affected me. I felt anxiety and needed Ativan for the first time in years. I felt frightened and emotional. Luckily my Mom got me out of the house and I felt better. I think it was all the fasting, plus being anxious about my health, and the procedures. I think though they should have told me I could have had a reaction to the sedation with my medication.
I've been ok so far. I am taking 10mg of Bisocodyl nightly (the only thing that works for me) and they recommended milk of magnesia daily.
I hope I can start to move forward with my life....
Thanks so much for all of your replies, this is a great forum.
