Has anyone experienced this? Sorry this is really gross.

Every now my body does this horrible thing:  I begin to have abdominal pain, then I begin to sweat, and my heart starts racing...then the pain increases and I sit on the toilet hoping to go, but I can't...The pain is unbearable.   I begin to feel faint, so I have to go onto the floor, where I lie moaning in pain for up to 30-40 minutes until the bowels finally evacuate, ending in diahrrea, sometimes including blood.  I have no strength to get back onto the toilet, so I usually just have to go on the floor.   It is such a horrible experience.   After it happens, I feel normal, and it will be months until it happens again. 

I have had colonoscopies in the past which were normal so I don't run to the doc anymore with this.  It is totally unpredictable and random.  Just wondering if anyone has experienced it.  The doc said he hadn't heard of anyone having it.

Nana, it sounds like it could be something called "dumping syndrome." Does it happen within an hour of eating? After an alcoholic beverage or two? For some reason, some people's stomachs will occasionally "dump" their whole contents into the small intestine rather than gradually pumping them in. This can cause pain, faintness, cold sweats and often ends with one episode of diarrhea. I used to have these episodes when I was madly hyperthyroid, but there are a number of things that can cause it.

You might ask your doctor about this. There are medications they can prescribe to slow gastric emptying, and more important, they could look for a hidden cause.

I have never heard of that, but you describe exactly what happens. I don't drink alcohol, but it does tend to happen an hour or so after eating, and usually when I have eaten a bit too much food, or very hurridly. It also seems connected to nerves, like when I have had something very upsetting happen, it might happen after the next meal. As I mentioned earlier, I have been to the doc with this and nothing was found, so I just keep enduring it. It is so unpredictible, but I will just be more careful about what I eat and how much, and try to stay calmer. I'm a pretty hyper person.

I read something on here about not drinking beverage while eating. I started that today, as I usually drink a LOT while eating.

I have another question: After reading many posts at the website, I saw some mention of biofeedback to help some people but i couldn't figure out what it helped them with. Do you know how biofeedback is used for IBS symptoms?

i was diagnosed with dumping syndrome--i didn't have the frequency symptoms you did--i am sorry that sounds bad! in any case, they were able to determine the condition through a test--i ate toast and eggs (they put some creepy glow stuff in the eggs) and they monitored the speed at which the eggs went through my digestive system. it is a long test, they had to take pictures at two and four hours, but they were able to see what happened. if you have a GI you may want to talk about this test--i know there are different medications that can help.
