PAIN UNDER RIGHT RIB

Hey I kept getting bad pain under my right rib 3 yrs ago it was horrible, I couldnt keep anything down and the worse thing was I was pregnant too. The doc kept saying it was cos I was pregnant that I had this pain. (Never heard that before) He told me to drink those drinks that are oposite to the slim ones. Well they made me worse, I was in and out of a hospital for 3 months having a drip put in me cos I could keep anything down. Then one night I went to bed and I woke up with the worst pain ever, I felt like I was gonna die. I went to the hospital where they decided to do a scan and found out I had gulstones. They never thought about it before cos i was only 18 and not overwieght. I had them taken out in Aug when I was 4 months pregnant, they did a key hole on me. I cant remember anything after that not even how long I was awake for. My mum and partner said I was going really blue but the nurse said it was normal after an op. They went home that night worried about me. Later a surgen came round to check on me and saw I was right, turned out I had a inturnal bleed so had too rush me back into surgery. Was very scary and worring for my baby, luckily all went ok and my baby was fine.

Anyway my point is dont always trust your doctor!

 Its scary to me how long it has taken some of you to find whats wrong!

I've spent 4 months trying to figure out what's wrong with me and I'm already so tired of it all!!! Symptoms:

-Vomiting

-Nausea

-Terrible stomach pain

-Acid reflux/Heartburn

-Abdominal swelling (so bad at times I look 6 months pregnant)

-Pain/Pressure under my right ribs

-Abdomen tenderness

-Black (and sometimes black and green) diarhea for a couple days here and there... and then back to only having a BM once a month.

-After ultrasound of abdomen BRIGHT RED bloooooody diarhea for 2 days along with major pain

-Waking up in the middle of the night thinking I'm having a heart attack. Pain so bad I can't breathe.

-Pain after eating in stomach AND under ribs

I've lost quite a bit of weight because I don't eat much if anything most days. When I do I sometimes puke it back up again anyways.

Been to the Drs/Specialists almost 30 times and the ER twice in the past 4 months.

Had ultrasound, catscan, time test with ab scans(I think thats what it was called), xrays, anal manometry, EMG, Peritoneography, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, oooh you name it. I've had it done! Biopsies were taken and tested from my stomach and duoden with no defects...

of all the tests I'm only waiting on the results from the ultrasound.

If that's normal as well I'm.... at a loss. And I have no idea where to go from here. I don't know how you guys made it 3-10 YEARS not knowing!!! I don't think I'll stay alive that long!

Those symptoms sound serious and I beleive that Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome could be a possible cause of your symptoms and is easily treatable conventionally or with surgery (please ask if you are still seeking an answer).

For the rest of you:

Pain directly under the rib that arrises from running or walking briskly is most often related to an increase in exercise or affects people who are physically active. This is why it causes people to become scared because they feel they are otherwise healthy and all of a sudden have a pain that feels deep and that they cannot explain. There are a few reason that this can happen.

The most common cause of this pain is due a walking or running pattern, when the right foot strike the floor it bring the organs down, primarily the liver which is attached to the diaphragm by means of a ligament. As the diaphragm moves up during breathing and the liver is pushed down this can sometimes cause pain in the ligament. This is why exercise that does not involve the foot striking the ground such as biking will not cause the pain. This also explains why strengthening the core musculature which in turn will hold the liver in place will help as well.

A second possibility for the pain in the upper right quadrant (directly below the ribs) can be caused by a simple sprain of the central tendon of the diaphragm. Which mostly occurs in the right side as it is more exposed and prone to this injury. There is debate on why this is but most likely due to the shape of the diaphragm itself.

In either case decreasing exercises for a week or 2 or practicing other forms of exercise that do not provoke the pain is recommended. Likewise you can take some NSAIDs (ibuprofen) for 5-7 days which should cause the pain to go away as the irritation stops.
