I have one scheduled for 9am tomororw. I am trying to drink the golytely and having a hard time. It says on the bottle not to mix any flavoring but I read online ppl have added crystal light. Thoughts?

Also I was supposed to start at 3pm and did not start until 5pm, do you think this will be an issue?

The only issue with starting 2 hours late is that you will be up 2 hours longer finishing the process. You should be fine. I don't know about mixing Crystal Light with the Golytely. My Golytely came with a flavoring. It was still unpleasant tasting. I found getting it really, really cold helped. The prep is the worse part. I hope your colonoscopy goes well.

THanks I have finished 2 litres of it and I have to get up at 3am to take the rest. I'm halfway through so that's better than earlier. Still very nervous about tomorrow, but if they can help find a cause of the pain it will be worth it.

If you're worried about the actual procedure, I can calm your fears and anxiety about the test. If you can tolerate a skin prick for the IV, that is the worst you will feel tomorrow. They'll ask you to wear a hospital gown, ask you a lot of questions about medications you're currently taking, health related questions, etc. Start your IV, put a blood pressure cup on you, an oxygen sensor on your hand, wheel you in to the room and give you a sedative in your IV. That is IT. Next thing you know, you will wake up in the recovery room. The test will be over. Once you're alert enough, they'll ask you to sip water or soda (go easy at first, is my best advice). The doctor will come in and go over your test results. Once you're alert enough to get dressed, you can leave with your designated driver. I would suggest you eat and drink lightly for the first few hours afterwards but by dinner time, your appetite will be back to normal. You'll doze the afternoon away too and pass a lot of gas (quite normal). Some cramping, but it's not really painful. Just an odd sensation.

Once you're done with this prep, the worst part of a colonoscopy is over. I've had 9 of these procedures and many of us here on the forum have had them too.

For my first procedure I was really nervous, shaking something awful. The nurse kept telling me the worst was over (prep) and to relax. I didn't believe her! Well, I knew she was right when I woke up in recovery!

Ka..how did it go? I had one done 2 weeks ago and it went very well. I hardly knew anything had been done. I didn't even have gas...but was quite sleepy the rest of the day and I did have one heck of an appetite. Boy was I glad to be able to eat again!

I have to say the entire experience was awful. THe Golytely was awful, very hard to drink 4 Liters of basically salt water. Then I was up again at 3am to drink the rest. Went for colonoscopy at 9am..they didnt give me enough drugs so it hurt badly, I asked him to stop and he didnt, thankfully it was only a few minutes. I have a lot of gas, but other than that I feel fine. I am not tired at all, I suppose because it seems like they didnt give me much medication.

The good news is in the scope was normal.

Wow, your colonoscopy experience is extremely uncommon. I would call the office manager, lodge a complaint, something. You wouldn't want another patient to go thru what you did! I wouldn't. Every single person I've talked to who have had these procedures and most if not all on here have all said they didn't feel a thing.

Have you had any surgery in the past, where you would know if sedatives do not work well for you? Just curious.

They should have stopped that test, immediately and waited until the sedatives took effect. In my cases, I feel it within 3 or 4 seconds and then I'm in the recovery room.

I am so sorry to hear you had this experience. Please call this doctor and tell him so.

I had a scope down a few weeks ago for my stomach and I didnt feel a thing.

I'm certainly not qualified or trained in the medical field to say for certain, but it sounds to me as if you received a much smaller dose of Versid. It should have worked. Since you didn't feel a thing 2 weeks ago. Did you to the same out pt facility?

I am hoping another member responds. This is something I would not remain silent on.

no the scope was done at a different hospital and from a different DR. I went to this person for a 2nd opinion. The pain was only for about 5 minutes, and I have done similar reading on here where ppl have also felt the pain.

Has anyone experienced anything what I have? I had a colonoscopy on 12/28 and 3 days after that I started getting sick.  about an hour after breakfast or sometimes dinner I started getting cramping then diarrhea then vomiting and it goes on for 2 hours. That happened 3 days in a row, then it will stop for 2 or 3 days then it's starts again.  This has been going on now for almost a month and the doctor says it was probably just stress on the colon or it  was irritated and it should go away.  But I don't believe him and then is really pissing me off because when I get that attack it ruins the rest of my day. I'm sick and tired of getting sick.  Has anyone experienced anything like this? If so, how much longer do I need to suffer?

Orginally I had the same experience with scopes that Ka had. My stomach scope I was out and felt nothing but my colonscopy was a nightmare and I screamed the whole time for him to stop but he just kept saying "a little longer". Same doctor. I changed Doctors and have had two more of each and never felt a thing except once for the stomach one I could feel something moving but apparantly there aren't a lot of nerve endings being affected with the stomach one and some people get no sedation. I also have friends that were awake during their whole colonscopy and watched it on the screen and had barely any pain which I found hard to believe after what I went thru. Same Doctor i had the first time. Because I have lung problems they have to be extra careful that my oxygen doesn't drop too low even though they always give Oxygen to all the patients where I go, not just lung patients. I don't know why there is such a variance but glad I don't have to go for a couple more years.

cry  Hey everybody!

I just had a colonoscopy on the 4th.  The prep wasn't bad, dulcolax and miralax with orange gatorade.  Before the procedure, the doc gave me Phenergan, Benadryl, Morphine, Valium and Versid.  I began to talk loopy and fall asleep, but when the procedure began, I was wide awake.  I could feel the scope going up, up, and away!  I was lucid the whole time. 

When I woke up in recovery, I felt really, sick; nauseated.  I was sent home.  Stopped a few miles down the road to get a soda.  I took a few sips and lost my lunch.  My sister called the doc's office and they said to eat a few saltine crackers.  BIG MISTAKE.  I made it home and the vomiting began.  I had some Phenergan tabs and tried to take one, lost it too.  No abdominal cramps just dry heaves by then.  Called my doc and he said DON'T EAT!!!

Everyone at the hospital said it would be okay to eat.  Anyway, I threw up for about eight to nine hours, beet red and itching and stinging all over.  I called my doc's office back, (my sister had called for phenergan suppositories) and they said I would have to wait until the next day for a scrip to be called in. 

So, I called my general practitioner and he called me the phenergan in to my pharmacy in about 5 minutes or so.  Two days later and I am still not well.  Has anyone else had this kind of experience?  Please let me know. confused

No, but frankly you had an abundance of drugs that I think would upset anyone's stomach. The only thing I have ever had was Fentanyl and Versed. It sounds as if you had an allergic reaction and I would thing that Benedryl would help you more than Phenergan. I realise it is used as a allergy drug but for reactions like you are having I think had you gone to ER (which is where I would have been) they would have given you a shot of Benedryl. I don't know why you would have been given Phenergan, morphine and Benedryl along with the Versed and Valium. Maybe someone else can explain it. I think you had a reaction to the Morphine. I think it was more than an upset stomach which is what the Phenergan was probably being given for.

Kao7722, are you sure the doctor didn't do a sigmoidoscopy? That's only a partial colonoscopy and I was awake for that. It was quite paiful. Doc kept saying he was almost done. That was years ago -my first colon test, now I always get a colonoscopy(w/different dctor) - the needle goes in, and then they are waking me up showing me pictures of my wonderful now polyp free colon.

I've never heard of this befoe - so I don't mean to scare anyone, but...
Last year my mom went through the whole prep, (she had a doctor I had years ago I didn't like) went into the hospital, needle in arm, then she was woke early. Doc said prep wasn't enough and my mom had the choice of waiting and going bsck in the next day (nothing but jello), or rescheduling completely. Needless to say she didn't want to redo the whole prep so she went in the next morning.

confused  I called my doctor the day after the procedure.  I spoke to his nurse.  Basically she told me, "sorry".  I am going to follow up with my general practicioner on Monday; to tell him what happened and about the "cocktail" the doctor gave me.  Also there was not an anesthesiologist there during the procedure. That is who needed to be there.  I am still traumatized from this procedure and I still want to cry.  I'll just have to wait until Monday and talk to my doc.

I want to make sure no one else goes through this!!!!!!!!!!!!  I will post on Monday and let you all know what the doc (gp) says.

I have friends that were awake during their whole coloscopy. My very first one they didn't sedate me enough and I screamed the whole time as he just kept saying " a little bit more". It was the cramping that was on and off. Terrible. I changed Doctors but my friends had very little pain with same Doctor. There is never a anesthesiologist there when I have mine but there is a dedicated nurse that handles it and watches your vitals. I have lung disease so they have to be very careful but after 3 of these I have come to trust the woman who probably does more of these than an anesthesiologist. It is not expensive enough to warrant a Dr. anesthesiologist. Only in extreme cases would that be called for. But as for all that stuff you had I would definetly find out why you had all that as it is certainly is unusual.
