I've suffered from IBSC for 12 years. At first, my symptoms were a bit "muddled," that's the best way I can describe it. I would fluctuate between C and D. I found out a few years later that I had Crohn's disease. Fortunately, it was only a moderate case and I've been flare-free since 2000. However, for the past six years, my IBSC has been horrible. I had a bowel movement maybe once a week if I was lucky (most of the time I took a few ex-lax to make myself go). I was constatntly stressed about
it. I even had two sets of pants--one for after I went and one set for all the other days that I was horribly bloated! I went to three different doctors. All of the sais "here, try Miralax" or "eat more fiber."
No matter what I told these doctors, they all said the same thing. Miralax and fiber made me worse. It made the cramping and bloating worse. It made the horrible gas worse.
Zelnorm helped a bit, but after it was pulled from the market, I was back to square one. Amatiza made my skin crawl and didn't really help, and Lactulose just made me gassy. But, I couldn't stop looking for something that helped. I knew that I wasn't normal despite what the doctors told me.
Finally, I went to a top doctor. I didn't care how much he cost (or that he didn't take insurance) and beleive me when I say it was well worth the money. I did a bunch of tests (who knew there were tests for this! None of my other doctors did any tests!) We did a amo rectal motility study and a syth mark study... both of them came back normal. The diagnosis was IBSC and that my system was just very slow. BUT, the doctor told me that there were many ways to treat this and that we would work together until we found one that worked. And boy did we ever! Here is my "cure":
Cytotec 200 MCG tablet 4x/day
two spoonfuls of Phillips MO at night (or two of milk of magnesia and 2 of mineral oil if you can't find Phillips MO)
The first two weeks I was on this regimine were a bit precarious. I had some bad gas and D at first. But, come week 3 and I was having a normal bowel movement every day. Yes, every day, like clockwork. Like my husband! So, keep looking for your cure. Don't stop, because you think your problems are normal or because a doctor says he/she can't help you. Keep looking. And, maybe suggest my "cure" to your doctor and see what they say?
