IBS - Smelly gas/stools?

Hi there,

Just wondering how many of you experience this? I go through periods where I get substantial smelly gas, along with foul stools. (Not normal smelly.) Then, it'll go away for a few days.
Always seems like the problem is worse at night and in the mornings. I've had general blood tests run, and some stool tests for parasites, etc. Nothing found. I did develop gastritis in
January which I'm still fighting off, as well. So, I don't know if a bug is involved.

Wondering if any of you IBS'ers have experienced this. My stools are not totally loose or totally hard. Closer to loose, and I empty in a few trips every morning. Not pleasant.
I've had IBS (so I'm told) for about 20 years....I'm 42. I also get the cramping, etc. when the gas is at its worst.

I know most IBS'ers have cramps and gas, I'm just more wondering about the smelly part... and if there is anything you were able to do to fix this, or relieve the symptoms.

I have Ulcerative Colitis and with my gas gets smelly it usually means that I am flaring.  When my colon is in remission the BM's and gas doesn't smell that bad.  Its usually a sign of bAD bacteria growing in your colon, you should start or increase your intake of a good probiotic like Renew lIfe ultimate flora critical care or Bio-k plus to put healthy bacteria back into your intestines.  Metamucil is also a good thing to take nightly.

Interesting... I've heard a couple people with IBD say the smelly thing is related. But, from what I can tell... I don't have any of the mainstream symptoms of UC or Chrones. (No D, no blood, rare C, no ulcers that I know of.)

That said, I am battling the gastritis so who knows if that plays any role.

Thanks for your response! I did indeed just start probiotics today. I'm starting slowly, as I want to ease into it and avoid major cramps if possible... I've got enough.

Occasional smelly gas may be from foods containing sulfur, like: poultry, meat, eggs, dairy, nuts, coconut, legumes, tea, coffee and certain vegetables, such as tomatoes, cabbage, asparagus, broccoli, onions, garlic, and fruits, such as avocado, banana, watermelon.

Fructose malabsorption is commonly misdiagnosed as IBS. In this condition you get loose stools after eating foods, high in fructose or sugar alcohols (sorbitol, mannitol...), so after fruits or anything sweetened with fructose, HFCS, table sugar (fructose + glucose), or sugar alcohols (polyols).

I seriously doubt probiotics will help you. Probiotics, as I know, help only in bacterial diarrhea and Clostridium difficile overgrowth caused by antibiotic therapy.

Your diet can help create smelly stools and gas sometimes even in normal people. But if this goes on long term you should get checked out.

What kind of diet do you have?

Well I have had a bad problem with smelly gas. It is so bad that it makes me so anxious at work and embarrassed that I want to ask if I can work from home. A girl at work has said something to me a few times and I need help with this. I have an appt. with a gastroentologist on June 7th but if anyone has any ideas to help with this in the meantime I would really appreciate it. I'm having to take clonipin at work to calm my anxiety over it and I just don't know what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Bryan I have the same problem with my smelly gas but i dont have cramps.just smell that worsens at night and in the morning. Did u heal? Tell me the treatment pls if u know.its very annoying me cry
