My gallbladder was removed in April (emergency surgery). My surgeon put me on Questran the following week because I could not eat anything without experiencing severe diarrhea. Questran has not helped at all. I have diarrhea every 2-3 days. The length between episodes depends on how many Immodium A-D I had to take to get the diarrhea to stop. Most days I have to leave the table and literally run to the bathroom. Within 5-10 minutes after I finish the meal I'm in the bathroom, not once but 2-4 times. I typically have diarrhea mixed with semi-solid stools. I added Caltrate w/vitamin D in June and take one three times a day. Caltrate has not helped one iota. The immodium A-D is the only thing that stops the diarrhea.
I've cut out all dairy products, yogurt included. I wasn't eating fried foods or sweets so no modification was need in that area. I eat small meals which has cut down on the # of times I visit the bathroom after eating. I am also still plagued with stomach pains after I eat, but not after every meal.
Yesterday my surgeon told me to check on the cost of Welchol and Chloestripol(sp?). Welchol is nearly $300.00/month and Cholestripol is $57.00/month. I don't have prescription insurance and my discount script card only gives me a $5.00 discount so it looks like I'm stuck with Questran, which doesn't work, Caltrate and Immodium A-D.
My family doctor told me that about 80% of the population whose gallbladders are removed have these same problems the rest of their lives.
