Wow, thank you so much for your detailed response. You sound as if you are really struggling, I would consider an ostomy. Remember, having one is not the end of the world. The ostomy group here are the very best, so, so many very kind people over there.
I know 13 years sounds shocking to admit but you have to remember I am older than you probably are, so it's really quite acceptable to stay home and deal with things as they are when you're my age, lol - 56 BTW. My family (two daughters, 21 and 24) and my husband are all great in that they know I need a bathroom a lot and often just leave me alone to take care of things. If I didn't have their support, I'd really be depressed. Somewhere along the way, probably 2 years in, after my new colon surgeon drew me a diagram of what's left of my colon and then put a picture of what one should look like next to it, I had a very weepy day. I cried probably all day long, it was a shock but she said - you don't have a sigmoid and this is primarily why you have so many bm's. She also said 20 years prior to that, let's say 30 - surgeons were not even considering reconnecting the colon, you were just given a permanent colostomy, end of discussion. Sometimes I'd like to talk to my original surgeon and ask him - now why did you take this surgical approach? I've been told I could have had a J-pouch. Now that might be something for YOU to consider, this is when they remove your entire colon and create a new sigmoid/reservoir internally in the form of a J, from your small intestine. That might be something to discuss with your surgeon.
I do have insurance, I probably wasn't clear on that but very high deductibles - $2500.00, almost any procedure isn't covered, only office visits, etc. I haven't had a polyp since 1999, knock on wood.
I meant to add in above paragraph, once I fully accepted my new colon as it is, I do think I've mentally been able to handle my situation. Before that, I was reminiscing a bit too much about
the way things were. Once I turned that corner and said to myself - okay, how can I make this better, I think I've done fairly well.
I've tried oh 20 approaches, meds, etc. Recently, I tried Metamucil, only took 1/2 teaspoon, instead of the 1 tablespoon dosage, and within 48 hours I was a mess - it was better than any bowel prep too. So I checked Metamucil off a list of what not to take in the future.
While your situation sounds similar to mine, I think my new
opening/lower colon area is wider than yours, I hardly ever struggle with constipation. You sound as if you're really having trouble with that.
One final comment to make, you might want to buy a Sitz Bath, it's a plastic insert that you place inside your toilet, you add warm, soothing water and that's another way to feel clean, instead of going to the trouble of taking a full bath. I've also read that bidets are the way to go for people like us. But I don't have the luxury of having one.
Well I wish you well. I'm glad you found this forum. So many very helpful people here.
