When I was in the ER with severe constipation, the doctor had me get a bottle of magnesium citrate (which is often the "backup" to traditional colonoscopy preps and you can get at any CVS, Rite Aid, etc. for a couple bucks) and drink that the next day, as well as start a daily Miralax regimen (she also wanted me to start taking a laxative, but I thought that was overkill.
Anyway, since then, I've continued to deal with constipation issues, so I've done the magnesium citrate clean-out again. It's pretty much a full-day event, so you need to clear your calendar. I wouldn't do it often, certainly not more often than once every month or two, and you need to be careful especially with magnesium citrate because you're pumping a lot of magnesium into your system and there are risks associated with that (read the label on the bottle). It's always best to check with your GI/PCP first.
