You know it occurred to me that if your doctor scoffed at an illeostomy, he would not have counseled you on what diet to follow. I was told to eat whatever I wanted to but possibly in smaller portions. That was all the diet advice I received. How absurd my surgeon thought I could go back to eating high fiber, fresh fruit, chili, candy, etc., etc. I was a mess back then, 3 bm's during one meal - one meal! I joked I was going to set up a TV tray table in the bathroom and eat my meals in there, sitting on the commode.
Well, I learned I should have been told to go on a low residue diet! My insides were just raw from all they had done to me and then on top of that eating whole wheat products, fresh berries, fresh pineapple, etc.
In case you are wondering, you need plain food - white bread, plain bagels, white rice, chicken, turkey, mashed potatoes (instant helped me the most), applesauce, bananas were the only fresh fruit I could digest, cottage cheese, plain or vanilla flavored organic yogurt (you want a brand high in probiotics), just google low residue diet and you'll see the entire diet. It all makes sense when you think about
it - my surgeon later had to admit a LRD was probably much easier for me to digest and a diet that would encourage formed stool.
