Hi haven't posted here before, I've to get a colonoscopy at the hospital next week and am wondering what to expect they are going to give analgesia and sedation can anyone tell me is this procedure painful how long it lasts etc..... Thanks!

They normally give a light sedation. They put you out and they do the scope. You shouldn't feel a thing. Afterwards you might be gassy and if they take any biopsies, there might be a slight pinchy pain where they took them and also light bleeding.

Hi, I've had one colonoscopy which was part of an annual physical. They will probably ask you to have another person drive you there and back because you will be sedated and they don't want you to drive afterward. Make sure you inform the nurses beforehand what meds you are on. I became nervous while I was there but the nurses recognized this and did their best to talk to me and distract me. They asked if I had kids and then asked me to count backwards from 100. And before I knew it I was 'out' and the next I knew, it was over and I was waiting for the doctor to come and go over the results. (You will get a copy, I'm sure, because who remembers what they say?) I think the whole procedure is about 30 minutes or so.

I did not have any pain during or after. There were no irregularities and no biopsies were taken. They only do that if they find something suspicious. If you are particularly nervous, be sure to tell them. I think they encounter this a lot and are used to patients being anxious, so they know how to help you.

Where are you having it done? I'm outside of Memphis. I had mine at an office on Wolf River Parkway.

Hi LaineG I live in Glasgow Scotland so I'm getting colonoscopy here. I have some paperwork from the hospital, they dont say that you will be unconcious but slightly drowsy and relaxed, I don't feel to nervous as this week I managed to get myself to the dentist (I'm dental phobic) can this be any worse? Anyways glad your colonoscopy went so well and hope I can say the same thing come Monday

Ah! I was fooled by your user name! tongue Yes, there are different ways of sedating, and for colonoscopies they just need you relaxed and probably a little 'under'. As I wrote, I don't remember anything at all.

I'm sure you'll be fine. Just make sure you follow the 'cleaning out' procedure the day before.

I know this may sound like a shock but they actually put me to sleep for it. I too thought i would be somewhat awake, but they put medicine in my arm through veins, told me to turn on my side, and i was knocked out.

Just had procedure done. Thanks for all support I wasn,t asleep but nicely mellow. Just cramp like sensations and
a clean bill of health!

Being a veteran of 12 colonoscopies, tell them to knock you out, with Propofol NOT anesthesia. Propofol, you will wake up like you came back from vacation. Anesthesia may have side effects like headache, nausea, etc.

Don't worry about a thing. Make sure they take samples every 10mm in each quadrant. Otherwise it won't be complete
