Hi,

I'm not sure if I can post about gb removal on the IBS forum but didn't know where I else I could ask. I've been dealing with severe digestive issues the past two years and finally after two months of debilitating gb pain I had removal this morning. There was sludge found in my gb and it was inflamed.

The procedure itself went fine but I am in a ton of pain post op. I was expecting to be uncomfortable and deal with discomfort but this has been HARD. I still have burning, throbbing pain in my gb region. My whole abdominal cavity is rock hard from trapped gas, and I've had two episodes of sharp stabbing pain to the right of my gb region.

I was in pain before removal but I was hoping to get a little relief! Can any of you share your experience? How long did it take for you to recover and feel somewhat normal again? Thanks for sharing.

Gallbladders are a family curse! Mine was removed because it had a 0% injection rate (non-functioning). It was also infected. Post op was hard. Lots of trapped gas that rose under my shoulder, but the rest of my recovery was swift. It took about three weeks to feel well (shorter than my c-section).

I have had no problems with digesting fats. Ease back into you diet as instructed by your doctor. You should be fine!

I can say that seven years later, I was diagnosed with celiac disease which is genetic. Had I been diagnosed sooner, I think my gallbladder would have been saved. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that is genetic. It has over 300 symptoms as it damages the small intestine causing malabsorption. Anemia is one of the top symptoms outside of intestinal symptoms.

A simple blood test can be done by any physician. Research at the University of Chicago's celiac center. It is a well-written site. Those with IBS-d/c should be screened for celiac disease. You do not have to be underweight!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I've been tested for celiac multiple times so I don't think that was the root cause. I don't eat much gluten anyways since it seems to constipate me. I was eating low fat for two years prior to gb surgery I was so afraid of an attack so I will be really curious to see how my body handles it now. I'm only two days post op so I'm hoping each day I will make an improvement. I'm so tired of being in pain!!! I've been dealing with gb issues for a long time now so I hope surgery was the answer.

Great, be sure that you received the complete celiac panel. The standard screening test TTG does not catch all celiacs. In fact, some test negative to all the blood tests. Just something to consider if you still have problems down the line.

Really that's interesting. What about a stomach biopsy for celiac? I had one done during an endoscopy and it came back negative...

Biopsies are taken from the small intestine -- not the stomach -- when testing for celiac disease. Six or more tissue samples are suggested as damage can be patchy. Consider getting a copy of the pathologist report. Your doctor may not have been testing for celiac disease.

If your surgery was laproscopic they do try to get as much of the gas out as possible. They are not able to get it all out. Walking is the best way to get rid of the gas is to walk.
