Anti-depressants?

Usually anti depressants are used for 6-9 months for treatment for depression that is not chronic. I am on wellbutrin 150 mg and it is not necessarily for my Ulcerative colitis (mainly causes D, along with bleeding etc). I would say that I noticed a difference in my depressive state in about 2 weeks. I stopped crying as much and I guess my stomach felt a bit better... But I dont think it is a treatment for IBS or IBD, but a treatment to get your head right because there is a mind gut connection.

Yeah the anti-depressants aren't for depression as such. the doc has only given me doses of 10mg which she says are so small that they won't affect my 'head' and also are not addictive (normal doses are from 25mg all the way up to 150mg).

No, they're strictly for the ibs to target the sensors in the gut which send messages to the brain, so i was just wondering if anyone had been prescribed something similar soley for ibs?

yeah i will do, but i'm not sure when i'm gonna start taking them tho!

i'm trying some other stuff at the mo and also thinking about trying fibre supplements first - but if i do start taking them i'll keep you posted!

Lately I have read that 75% of the Seratonin(sp) in the body is in the gut and they are finding a link between IBS and Seratonin levels which I think is the reason they are prescribing antidepressants that work on the seratonin.

hey im have been and am still taking amilitriptine for last 2 years, i started on 10mg nad it worked for a while, but stomach got used to it so dose was upted to 20mg and worked a little bit again. i had no major side affects, just first week woke with v dry mouth like hangover without the alcohol!!  i have reduced dose again as not working now well nothing is working at mo to be honest!!i woud say give them a go, things work for different people,  good luck.

plus any ideas what can do for bloatedness that has lasted 3weeks now with on off acid reflux and heartburn went to A&E last night as so bad but given pain killers and sent home, i often wonder if have IBS or something else.  Everytime end up in hospital the minute i say IBS they do nothung and send me home feeling crap!!

plus  haveing chloric irrigation sat anyone had one before, bit scared but cant wiat to actually feel like been to the loo as dont think been for a month!!

Ny Dr. told me today that if I am belching gas that the gas is caused from acid reflux or swallowing air and if I have the other kind of gas it is from food and something else which I quickly forgot. I think he said bacteria. I had never heard that before. I have had so much nausea and the belching relieves it for the minute but then if builds back up again. I don't think that mean you can't get gas from eating in the stomach though just that we rid ourselves differently depending on the type of gas. He gave me Zelnorm to try. He insists this is IbS. It is human nature to want to find a more definete explanation and that is why this is so frustrating to all of us, especially since it is different for everyone it seems. I use Phazyme for gas which is stronger than GAS-X. You can get the generic in most stores of both. Beano you take before you eat. I think.

I was simply stating my opinion from experience that the antidepresents in many cases discize-hide the real problem
such as was with my case for me so many years. Yeah the antidepresent may seem to relax the gut and you may seem temporarily better
but for the long term results and root cause of the real problem is not found that way with realxints,antianxiety and or antidepresents.

One again this is my opionion along with three of my favorite doctor's opinions.

Elavil is prescribed because it is an antispasmadic drug as well. It calms the stomach. The docs all know this.

Hi Roadtrip. I just started taking 10 mg doses of amitriptyline for pain control. I take them before bed as they can make you very tired. My husband used to take this medication and dose for lower back pain and it worked well. Hoping it does the same for myself.

I also take Celexa, which is an anti-depressant, for depression. I've taken this for 3 years and it works very well for me.

Ok, so what it the root cause. It seems to be different as this is a functional problem not a physical problem with out intestines. I think with IBS it is whatever works safely for you. I didn't know taht elavil was an antispasmotic. I have a friend that was given it for fractured disc pain.
