Des, I read the article on women's weight gain via IBS, but I wonder about
their comment that fake sugars raise your blood sugar levels. I thought that was why diabetics could use Splenda and Sweet N' Low and Equal--it doesn't affect their blood sugar at all. Has anyone heard that it does? I know sugar alcohols will affect the blood sugars, but then they are not calorie-free either, which is what the article was addressing. I do agree that there is evidence that the more sweetness you taste--even if it's not real sugar--the more you want.
I also found it amusing that they blamed a high fat diet for fatigue and toxin build ups, despite the fact that everyone in France eats a high fat diet and has longer life spans than either Brits or Americans. Of course some people might accuse the French of "Gallic laziness", but I think we just don't appreciate having some time off from work. We're all "no pain, no gain" kinds of people. Which is probably why the longest-lived people in the world are constantly from France. If we had two hour, 5-course lunches everyday, we'd live to be 120 too! But, there is a big difference in the fat that the English and Americans get versus the fat that the French get. We get ours from fried foods--partially hydrogenated oils--and red meat, and they get theirs largely from dairy. Of course they eat some red meats and duck livers and the like, but they eat almost no partially-hydrogenated junk. They're starting to as sweets vending machines are being introduced and fast food restaurants, but I just saw an article on KFC and McDonald's which showed they put more fat in their products in the U.S. than in any other country, although the U.K. wasn't too far behind. They put the least amount of fat into food in the Netherlands or Norway--can't remember which. So even when the French eat at Le McDonald's, it's not as bad as when we eat at it here. KFC and McDonald's said they adjusted the fat levels in their food based on local tastes. That tells you something about
Americans, doesn't it? Of course, putting fat into our food makes us think that we want it. I bet if they very gradually lowered it, no one would ever notice.
Wait, I had a point at the beginning of this conversation with myself. Oh yes, I am interested if anyone knows anything about
fake sugars and blood sugar levels since Stuart is diabetic and he drinks diet colas some and uses Sweet N' Low in his coffee, etc.

Keri, That might be a good question to post in the diabetes forum.

That's interesting that they think that stress can lead you to build up food intolerances/allergies.

Here is a video that explains the basics of IBS (very good video!!!)... Once you get to the page, click the video icon next to "Bowel Symptoms and Bloating: Could it Be IBS?" and it will
open the video, once
opened there are other videos under it that are good as well.
