I have already had one colonoscopy back in Jan  05 but my new Dr wants me to have another one.  So today was prep day and tomorrow is test day.  The last time I had it done I only had to take something 2 times and this time I had to drink a whole gallon of nasty nasty stuff!!!  Even with the flavoring it was bad.  I just hope my system is cleaned out of enough.  After drinking all that stuff (or as much as I could gag down) they had better do the test.  The new Dr says he wanted me to do the gallon of stuff because the other Dr had written in his notes that he thinks the little bit of colitis that he found was a false reading from the prep.  I don't know!!  Will see what they say tomorrow.  After 14 years of chronic D I almost hope they find something that would explain it.  But I am sure the fall back with be the same as the other Dr.....IBS!!!  Will let you know how it went.

Make sure they take biopsies regardless. Microscopic colitis and collegeneous colitis do not show up as abnormal to the eye on a scope. These conditions are dx'd through biopsies. Some docs don't even test for it because they are considered "rare". Sorry you had to drink that stuff. I feel for you. My doc let me take the pills again and I so prefer it more so.

Well that is done!!!!  Thank God!!!  When I had my last colonoscopy I could not feel a thing, this time I felt everything it was very painful.  I told the Dr and they gave me more med but nothing worked.  Then they did the endoscopy and I ended up pulling the tube out, the Dr "scolded" me.  he said he has never had a patient do that before. He re-insterted it in and all I did was gag and choke on it.  ARG!!!  What a nightmare!!1  Like I said the last time I had it, it was a piece of cake and I felt nothing!!  Obviously the meds they gave me didn't do anything.  As far as the colonoscopy went he said everything looked fine...he did take several samples to biopsy.  So maybe I will know something in a week or so.

I'd have beaten him over the head with his scope and refused to let him put it back in until I was good and unconscious. I learned some years ago you can't let nurses and doctors abuse you. If you don't look out for yourself, too many of them won't do it for you. Some just don't care if you're in pain or not, and that's when you have to get proactive and refuse to be treated in such a manner. It's not the 16th century and you're not in front of the Spanish Inqusition. You don't have to submit to torture.

I just got off the phone with my Dr. I called him because I just feel weird. And after the painful colonoscopy this morning I didn't know what could be wrong. I asked him why it was so painful and he said he doesn't understand why it was because when I started complaining of the pain they game me more of the drugs. he said I was given 125 of Fentenyl and 8mm of Versed. Now I have a rash on my arm and my temp is 100.0
So I don't know what is going on. And the rash is not on the arm that I had the IV in. They had to poke me 4 times for the IV because they said my arm was so rock hard from being tense that they couldn't get the needle in. I am going to get to bed and hopefully in the morning I will feel better

I wonder if the solution was really getting into a vein or into your bloodstream someway else. That is quite a bit of sedation so it should have worked. I only get about half of that Versesd and I am not a lightweight and I go out. I have had colonscopy when I didn't get enough sedation and it was hell. I felt like killing the Dr. but I was too busy screaming. I changed Drs. so now I am out but my Drs. will not do both at the same time which I guess is why you had to have more.

Next time they have to poke you tell them to put a warm towel on the area for a few minutes before they are going to poke. That is standard proceedure where I go.

Sheryl72,   If you have a fever you need to call your doctor.   It is not normal to have a fever after a proceedure...  I have had both done and never woke up that is crazy!!!.  That means they did not give you enought meds...  He had no right to scream at you!!!  I would have taking the tube and shoved it up his you know what!!!  I did have alot of pain after my last colonoscopy so much they sent me to the ER...  Some of us are extra sensative for pain...  My doctor did the right thing and sent me to make sure she did not perferate my colon...  You need a new doctor!!!!  Hope you are better today.... You may be having an allergic reaction to what they gave you (which may also explain why it didn't work). Make sure you get checked out by a doctor or hospital and let us know how you're doing.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies.  I finally felt better come Sunday morning.  Last week was also my vacation week so when I finally did get to the Cape, I do not have a phone line in my cottage, so that means no computer.....ARG!!!

I have a follow up with the Dr on the 18th. He is going to go over the results.  He did call me back that Saturday morning and ask how I was.  He figured I had an allergic reaction to the medicine. 

This Dr is a new Dr to me, I switched to him because after 14 years of nothing from my other Dr I wanted a second opinion. 

Everyonce in a while I get a sharp stabing pain in my stomache that I never used to get before.  I just hope that while he was up there he didn't do something!!!!

I will let you know about my follow up!!

Well, i got the test results in the mail today.  Dr says I have hemorrhoids (which I knew) and Colitis.  I have my follow up on july 18th with him.  Does anybody have any meds that help treat that??

Did the doc mention what type of colitis you have? There are many different types where the general term "colitis" means inflamation in the colon. I have ulcerative colitis but there are ischemic colitis, radiation colitis, micorscopic or collegeneous colitis and Crohn's colitis to name a few. If he didn't give you a specific, I would definitely give his office a call to clarify. This will make a difference on your treatment and also where the inflamation is.

I called the Dr's office this morning and they told me that it is called Eosinophilic Colitis.  I can't find much about it online. Can anyone tell me more about it?

You are right, there isn't much out about that. I didn't know what that was personally.

I found this http://health.enotes.com/childrens-health-encyclopedia/eosinophilic-gastroenteropathies , maybe you can ask your doc if he can point you to some resourses or maybe contact the CCFA to see if they might know anything or can steer you in the direction.

HI Again,  It seem like since I had my Colonoscopy on the 30th of June I have been having light headedness episodes. (if that word sounds right) :-)   Because of all the medication and the reaction that I had after the tests I am a little concerned about this.  They only last for a few seconds but they occur several times a minute.  I can't really describe it as dizzyness, it is more of a strange feeling.  I do have my follow up on the 18th and I am going to mention it to my Dr.  has anybody ever heard of that before?

Do you normally suffer from low blood pressure? This can make you feel light-headed or dizzy, especially when standing up after being bent over. I also sometimes get vertigo when I am on an elevator, depending on how rapidly it moves and stops.

But given the rash and fever you had after your colonoscopy, and the fact that they gave you such a big dosage of medicine to no effect, I still wonder if you haven't had some sort of allergic reaction to what they gave you? I don't think you should wait until the 18th to talk to your doctor. At least call his office and talk to his nurse and tell her all of the things that happened to you during the procedure and since and ask about the possiblity of your having some sort of adverse reaction to the medicine. Let them decide if you need to be seen earlier. Better safe than sorry if you have a possible allergy.

I went for my follow-up today. He gave me a few options. He said with this type of Colitis it is most likely food allergies. So he recommened me going to and Allergy specialist. He aslo took more blood work to run some for test. he said he could give me some med to controls the symptoms or I could continue with testing to try and find the problem. I opted for more testiing....as there has to be an answer!!! He did give me a prescription of an antibiotic called Rifaximin. Has anyone heard of that? it is suppose to cleanse the bowel (and only the bowels) of bad bacteria. He said if I go for the allergy testing not to take this until after the testing because it could cause a false-negative. So I am trying to decide what to do. I want to give the antibiotic a shot but also think I should go for the allergy testing.....Any ideas??

It can be a very effective antibiotic and is sort of being used as they say off-label and it was originally designed for travelors and childrens diahrea caused by certain bacteria. How long does he have you on it? The usual dose was 3x a day for 3 days but they are using it completly different for other things. I had a friend on it for almost a month and some people are taking it daily. My friend was fine while on it but once off it all started again in about a week.

Maybe someone can help with the food allergy thing but I have heard that allergy testing for food is not very reliable. Perhaps someone has some experience with it. Are you staying away from all dairy? That is one thing that many people have to cut out and it is not just the lactose in it that causes problems. Hope someone else can help you with the allergy part. Rifaximin is very expensive so I hope he gave you samples or it is covered with your insurance.

I would make an appointment with an allergist first. If they can see you quickly, then hold off on the antibtiotics until afterwards. If it's going to be several weeks or more, then go ahead and do the antibiotic and see if that helps you any. Did he tell you to take probiotics during and after the antibiotic so that you can put good bacteria back into your colon? I assume it's like the other antibiotics and kills good and bad alike?

Hi,  I was actually able to get an appointment with the Allergist for Monday the 24th.    So I will do that first and see what they say.  Maybe this will give me some answers.  As far as taking anything while on the antibiotic he didn't tell me to.  I figured I would eat yogurt to put back the good bacteria.  And to answer canyonbabe, I do not have a problem with dairy.  My problem is very strange (like me!!! :-) )  I can eat something today and be fine....and then eat the same exact thing tomorrow and have awful problems.....  So will see what the allergist says and then I will take the antibiotic after that.  I have nothing to lose....maybe I will gain my life back if it works!!!!

Let us know what they say, please. Years ago they did scratch tests for food as well as other stuff but they are pretty sophisticated now. Those tests were awful. I do have the same problem in that a food will affect me one day and not the next but over all I just avoid the dairy except some occassional goody. I did have to give up yogurt though and milk in cereal. Sometimes red meat bothers me other times not so I am not sure how they check for allergy. I was told at one time that one of the easiest ways was an elimination diet where you slowly add back foods over time and start with rice and lamb. I don't know if they still do that so please let us know.

Well, I went for my allergy testing today and everything darn one of them came back negative!!!!  I am back to the beginning again.  This type of colitits is suppose to be food related.  And not one test came back positive.  I don't get it.  I don't understand this disease.  I need to figure out how to get a complete digestive transplant...... eyes

Well, time to try the antibiotic and see if that helps you. Maybe you have something nasty in there that you are allergic to.

Hi,  I am going to get the prescription filled tonight and try that!! I have nothing to lose by trying it.  I just hope that it doesn't make my stomache worse...antibiotics tend to reek havoc on my system, well I guess there is not much that doesn't reek havoc.  I will give it a shot and see.  It is a 10 day prescription.

Ask the pharmacist, but you should be okay to take probiotics, like Digestive Advantage or Culturelle, while on the antibiotics and hopefully that will help keep you from having too much havoc in there. If you get the Digestive Advantage, it recommends two pills a day for a week, I think, if you have really bad IBS--I would certainly take those two pills a day while on the antibiotics, and probably for several days afterwards. Then you might want to drop back down to one a day until you finish off the box. You need to put some good stuff back in after killing it all off.
