Hi there.  I was diagnosed with IBS (mainly D) about a year and a half ago, but have never had any testing beyond the occult fecal blood test (which was negative at the time).  Since the beginning of the summer, I've been having some different symptoms, including an increase in the amount of mucous - sometimes this is all I pass - but I know this can be "normal" for IBS sufferers. 

Recently, however, in addition to other symptoms, I've started passing fairly bright red bloody mucous.   I did see a doc who did a rectal exam, and said she could feel something that may be a fissure -- but I thought these were normally associated with constipation and pain during a BM.  I've had neither of these symptoms. 

I'm being referred to a GI specialist, but in the meantime I'm wondering if anyone with IBS has had similar symptoms without a further diagnosis.

Bleeding hemmroids can also cause your symptoms and can be caused by diarrhea.  My hemmroids ahve never hurt, but they have only ever bled when I was constipated.  But if you are constantly on the toliet, that can put a lot of strain on them and may cause them to bleed, same as if you were constipated. 

There are several people on here who have had rectal fissures, ulcers, and all sorts of things above and beyond your basic hemmroids.  I'm sure they'll be able to tell you what can cause them and what can help heal them.

Hello Lula. I usually post on the UC forum, but this topic caught my eye. I think it is a really good idea that you've been referred to a GI specialist. I don't want to cause you any worry but when I first started experiencing symptoms they began as yours (D with mucous and blood). I had barium enema tests, blood tests, fecal tests, etc. and wasn't diagnosed with UC until I had my first colonoscopy in Aug 2005. Before the colonoscopy my primary doc had me believing that my problems were hemmroids (internal or external) because all my tests were fine. But thankfully I did go to a GI and was diagnosed. Perhaps you have ulcerative proctitis (a condition similar to colitis though the extent of the disease is limited to the rectum). The reason I say this is because you stated that the blood you are noticing is bright red which usually means it's "newer" blood (for lack of a better phrase) and happens only with a bm. By no means am I trying to diagnose you or anything, but I thought my story might be helpful, and if nothing else, at least a bit informative. Good luck with your GI appointment and let us know how everything goes.

Thanks Karen.  I saw my family doctor today, who did a quick anal scope (I think that's what it's called) to rule out hemmerhoids as a cause.  No hemmerhoids at all, but she could very quickly see an ulcer that bled when touched with a swab.  She has referred me to a GI specialist for a colonoscopy, which should take place within a 2-3 week wait, and said that it may be "proctitis" . . . only the colonoscopy will tell for sure, of course, but looks like you may not be that far off!
